I was on a panel recently about Brexit, where someone raised the old canard that only a small minority of voters identified Brexit as their top concern - as if Brexit were a self-standing issue, with no bearing on their declared “top” concerns - economy, healthcare, defence, immigration etc 🙄😡🙄

Well, I accept that criticism, maybe I’m being gratuitously harsh on SKS. And agree, we will still have to see if these refreshing statements translate into concrete action. Thank you for your feedback.

One of the best reads on this nonsensical proposal - doesn't mean it won't be popular of course: even if 95% of estates don't attract IHT, plenty of people aspire to be rich enough for theirs to do so (or rather to be able to use a policy like this to escape it).

Burnham, unlike Starmer, gets that if you have political capital, use it; and that if something is wrong, don’t let it fester, hoping problem will go away, but tackle it. His statements are at last lifting the miasma of lies, deceit and disingenuity around Brexit and opening space for proper debate

Burnham started his much-needed assault on Brexit yesterday by confirming Russian interference in the vote. Now this: “In a statement to MPs, Andy Burnham will argue it is time to "face up to the reality that Brexit has done more harm than good" and "the status quo is not good enough for Britain."”

Rejecting closer EU ties would be dereliction of duty, PM to say
Addressing the Commons, Burnham is expected to say that a new deal with the EU could help tackle illegal immigration and boost economic growth.

It’s v heartening to see the support for Ukraine from many prominent Americans, including many Republican members of Congress, who are planning to introduce legislation to stop the US from buying Russian oil. America is genuinely awful under Trump, but it is not (yet) a complete lost cause.

The Times from ten years ago this week. They were wrong. In fact Brexit is costing the UK economy roughly £100 billion a year. #ProjectFear
Hard Brexit

£66bn a year

Leaked Treasury papers reveal lost revenue

Cabinet ministers are being warned
that the Treasury could lose up_to
£66 billion a year in tax revenues under
"hard Brexit", according to leaked
government papers.

GDP.could fall by as much as 9.5 per
cent if Britain leaves the single market
and hastorely on WorldTrade Organi-
sation rules for trading with the conti-
nent, compared with ifit stayed within
the EU,theforecasts show.Such a steep
drop in revenue would force ministers
to slash public spending or raise taxes.
The £66 billion drop, contained in a
draft cabinet committee paper seen by
The Times, is nearly a tenth of the
£716 billion that the government is pro-
jected to collect in taxes this year, and is
equivalent to 65 per cent of the annual
budget of NHS England.

Business leaders are_increasingly
worried that the UK could fail to nego-
tiate a deal with the 27 remaining EU
members by the time it leaves the
union, and will face a "cliff edge" of
trade tariffs and barriers,

Several cabinet ministers who sup-
ported Remain are stepping up efforts
to prioritise business concerns and the
economy in Brexit discussions, fearing
that Leave supporters fail to realise the
scale of potential damage, It comes as:;
○ Theresa May faces a potential legal
challenge by a group of Conservative
MPs over the decision to begin Brexit
negotiations without parliament's
approval. The prime minister's spokes-
man ruledoutgiving MPs a voteyester-

the will of the British people.
○ Dominic Grieve, the former attor-
ney-general, said that unless the gov,
ernment could agree,a deal supported
by parliament it would not survive.

A long-awaited parliamentary report in the United Kingdom asserts Russia may have influenced the Brexit referendum; more importantly, the UK government did little to find out and prevent it.

They have bleeps on their televisions whenever someone says the word "F***". You can't hold a can of beer in the street so you need to wrap it in a brown bag. You can't show a naked t** on television. But an execution live on TV is OK. What a nation of sick hypocrites.

And what about the situation inside Georgia - the suppression of political opposition, amassing of power by one party, beholden to an unelected oligarch, arrest of peaceful protesters etc. Georgia suffers from Russian occupation, but under Georgian Dream, is destroying itself internally, too. Alas.

Rubio’s most revealing comments were in the paragraph below, left. What a contrast with what FD Roosevelt had to say - right. And given how much this administration likes to wrap itself in Christian piety, does he really think this is where where Jesus would stand on this debate!!! Rubio is a sham.
