Social science should be more open with the fact that novelty is smaller and smaller and more constructed. In like 1950, you could be like "we don't know how congressional committees work here is my book on congressional committees". Not the case now.

I’ll be on Radio-Canada (CBC French) tomorrow morning to discuss housing in Canada and the 2,000 job sites for a need of 430,000 houses per year. First Winnipeg, then Sudbury, then Vancouver, then Regina, then back home in Edmonton

why might we a slight increase in demand for studio rental apartments the month before university starts? total mystery what is important to draw giant conclusions about a single month of a 1% total increase and claim that everything people were telling you was a lie all along

Also, I know people hate reading before reporting leaping to conclusions, but if you LOOK AT THE DATA It shows that last month, rents for all properties, 1 bedroom condos and 2 bedroom condos kept going down in Vancouver So what are we looking at? A one-time slight uptick in studios in August.

I think it's cool that all political parties like to go "I DON'T TRUST THE PUBLIC FACTS" when it's convenient to their narrative. We have reams of data from government and private sources, along with endless anecdotes of people negotiating down their rent over the last two years. but whatever man

Some personal news: The bad news is that yesterday marked my last day as senior director of legislation and research at California YIMBY. The good news is that today is my first day as the chief urban planner of the Metropolitan Abundance Project. More here: mnolangray.substack.com/p/some-perso...

New paper out in Cities. We combine a survey of city councillors with a survey of the general public. Do councillors share their constituents’ housing preferences? Yes. Are they responsive to these preferences? Also yes—but only to those ideologically proximate www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

A Seattle architecture firm says uncertainty over Washington's proposed "millionaires tax" is causing wealthy clients to cancel major projects. What the FOX 13 report doesn't note is that their source has made multiple contributions to Let's Go Washington, the group pushing for the tax's repeal.

Why would Vancouver city council oppose density measures after hearing from a “tsunami” of opposition? Well I’m flummoxed. Well. Not flummoxed, really. #vanpoli #nimby #yimby #cdnpoli academic.oup.com/ijpor/articl...

The only non-work thing I’ll post: RIP Oliver Jones. Saw him in a jazz bar about 18 years ago in Montreal and it was an amazing show. Terrible loss.
