Most memoirs and litfic about feeling stagnant in life don’t resonate with me, because they assume marriage, children, and traditional job choices that are the cause of conflict. I’ll probably be single forever, so I want to read about wandering and loneliness and artistic personal fulfillment.

I eat a bagged salad from safeway 2-3 times a week. I also make my own sourdough bread from scratch. Fresh bread improves my quality of life. Shredding lettuce and hoping I can eat it all before it goes bad makes me miserable.

A friend of mine who was TA’ing for an AmLit course found a copy of Moby Dick a student had left behind. It had only one marginal annotation, around page 100, that simply said “whale is important.”
