The Noise Coming from Chicago Was Built by Green Bay
For years, Bears fans heard it.
Every Go Pack Go. Every fourth-quarter dagger. Every division title celebration. Every reminder that Green Bay wasn't just beating Chicago, they were owning the rivalry.
And if we're being honest, Bears fans deserved every bit of it. That's what makes the recent resurgence of the Packers-Bears rivalry such a good thing.
For decades, Chicago controlled this matchup. At one point, the Bears held a lead of as many as 24 games in the all-time series. But over the last three decades, Green Bay completely flipped the script. Brett Favre started the comeback, Aaron Rodgers finished it, and today the Packers hold a 109-98-6 advantage in the NFL's oldest rivalry.
For Packers fans, those years were glorious. For Bears fans, they were painful.
That's why the current state of the rivalry feels different.
After years of rebuilding, disappointment, coaching changes, quarterback failures, and watching Green Bay celebrate atop the NFC North, Chicago finally has something to show for its efforts. The Bears put together a strong season, captured the division, and gave their fan base a reason to believe again.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson from the moment he arrived last year, sought out Matt LaFleur and looked to revitalize the oldest rivalry in football. He certainly has done so. Matt LaFleur may not say it out loud, and explain the focus is on the players. Make no mistake, there is clear disdain on both sides, and if there wasn't, last years ending changed that.
Some Packers fans seem annoyed by the renewed trash talk coming from Chicago. But honestly? They shouldn't be.
That's what rivalries are supposed to be.
The Bears aren't talking because they've dominated for a decade. They're talking because they've finally climbed out of the hole. The swagger isn't coming from arrogance, it's coming from a lack of knowing what it’s like. It's coming from years of frustration, years of being the punchline, and years of hearing Packers fans remind them exactly where they stood.
It comes from hearing Aaron Rodgers telling you he owns you and knowing there wasn't much evidence to argue otherwise.
So yes, Bears fans are louder these days. That’s fine.
The NFL is better when Packers-Bears matters. It's better when both fan bases genuinely dislike each other. It's better when every meeting carries real stakes, real emotion, and real consequences.
As if the first few quotes of this week coming out from Packers locker room didn’t already confirm it, the feelings of dislike are mutual between the two teams. One of the rare commonalities in sports of today. In a day & age where everyone is friends after the game, or off the field, this is a bit different.
And while Packers fans may not enjoy hearing Bears fans chirp after years of silence, they should recognize something important:
Chicago earned the right to do it. For how long however, is completely up to Green Bay. Starting with this Sunday. Don’t forget, none of the moments that Chicago would bask in from the past year ever happen if Green Bay just held onto the lead in each loss to the Bears.
An all-time speech was once uttered by Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban ahead of the 2018 National Championship game vs the University of Georgia. Georgia would look to take down perennial powerhouse Alabama, the king of the SEC.
Leading up to the game, Saban would catch wind of Georgia head coach Kirby Smart stating “Alabama isn’t what they used to be.” Saban would address his team with that in mind. “The ultimate disrespect is when somebody takes what’s yours. And this is our game.”
Alabama would go on to win that game, and the National Championship, their 18th all-time.
The Bears have taken what was Green Bay’s for quite some time. The Packers now get the chance to play a role they haven't had to in the rivalry for some time. How the Packers respond, not by words, by actions, that will dictate how they deal with the disrespect.
🚨𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗙𝗟’𝗦 𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗥𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗦. Bears-Packers on Sunday will be the 214th meeting between the franchises, the most of any matchup in NFL history. Green Bay’s 109 wins over Chicago are also the most ever by one NFL team against another. https://t.co/r95iBuRiDE

Evan Williams ahead of Packers-Bears: "It's easy to have a camera in front of you and say whatever you want. That's not going to stop you from getting hit in the mouth on any given Sunday ... it's great for the news articles and all that, but at the end of the day, it's not going to show up on Sunday. It's not going to save you."

Packers LT Jordan Morgan asked if Ben Johnson saying "Fuck the Packers" after the playoff game annoys people: "Yeah. I mean, he's dissing us. He's dissing the Packers. A lot of people in here, I'm pretty sure, take that to heart. And we got a chance to prove to everybody on Sunday that we the best team."
