Joining Schengen would be great. Passport free travel around Europe is good. Brits would moan about it in advance but love the reality.

I spend my week crossing london on a bike and increasingly that means cycling alongside Wayve/Waymo robotaxis. it’s uncomfortable. they give you so much space, don’t do a close pass while accelerating as lights go red. So unnerving if you cycle on assumption everyone’s mental and wants to kill you.

Hate to say it, but it's time to end the "turn up and go" intercity rail service and go reservation only. Consistently farcically busy trains

OK, so just as I have to yell at my fellow Americans "air conditioners *are* heat pumps!" to combat basic ignorance of what the tech actually is, Europeans need to hear "heat pumps *are* air conditioners" because y'all are making arguments which don't make sense if you see why heat pumps are good.

Complaining about nightlife when you *checks notes* choose to live in Soho is like living in South Kensington and complaining about the museums. Or moving to Hackney and grumbling about creatives. Living in Richmond and hating green space. It's all getting a bit silly, isn't it?

No one judges you for cranking up the heating in winter. Why should air con in summer be any different? ✍️ www.linestotake.com/p/air-condit...
Much like the modern skyscraper was ultimately made possible by the invention of elevators, temperature interventions made living in cold climates, well, liveable. But while there is little judgement aimed at those in Oslo turning up the thermostat in winter while sprinting from heated shopping centre to heated office, the same sympathy is rarely extended to those in warmer climes.

Dare tell someone you’re moving to Phoenix, Arizona — a part of the world where to stand unprotected outside for roughly nine months of the year is to invite a non-refundable trip to the wax factory — and it is as if you are announcing record quarterly profits at your arms trading business, or crowing about a new cigarette brand being marketed directly to children. Somehow, staying cool somewhere hot is a bit suspect, practically gauche.

Clearly, if our electricity were still being generated by coal, this would be a problem. But the UK has become the first G7 country to phase out coal, with the final coal-fired plant at Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire closing in late 2024. According to recent analysis from Carbon Brief, UK greenhouse gas emissions have fallen to their lowest level since 1872, while coal use dropped to levels last seen in 1600.

Air con isn’t the sole solution. Decarbonisation of electricity, heat and transport remains paramount. Offsetting the urban heat island effect and adaptations such as planting trees, better design, reimagining public spaces remain urgent. But air conditioning, like central heating and indoor plumbing, is really, really neat. Everyone who wants it should have it.

🧵 1/10 There is a lot of "the EU won't want us back" in reaction to the statements made by Streeting and Burnham. As someone who has some experience of working closely with European diplomatic colleagues, and still has friends in Europe, I would say it is quite easy to construct the case for why

There is a tendency to blame Brexit for everything which encourages the savvy to downplay it, but we know that leaving the EU has reduced growth significantly, and hence tax revenue, and public finances are more strained as a result. 1/

If you were a nationalist trying to subtly implant an irresistible centrifugal force in the constitution of Britain, devolution to national Parliaments making laws and powers without need to raise the money for them, and actually chipping in more via the Barnett formula, would be the way.

In part, but obviously not in whole, this follows from an attitude that shoplifting or theft is victimless or okay, or excusable due to poverty (poverty mitigates, but does not excuse)

Astonishing just how many people on this website KEEP repeating the incorrect meme that the Mandelson appointment was about finding a way to manage Trump. It wasn't, and Mandelson's first task (which to be fair he did actually succeed at) was getting Trumpworld to stop going 'wth is with this guy?'
