There's a brand new image from JWST and it's beautiful. Stars are being born here.
From the source: "A young star cluster filled with many stars that display Webb’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border of the image. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust. There are several background galaxies strewn throughout the image."

On this grey and rainy day I find myself looking at photos of Revna from the fall of 2025 when we 1st met 🥰.
Revna a black and white diva dog laying on a big rock with a red bandana around her neck and that red tongue spiffing her whiskers up. Behind her is the fall leaves on the ground around a large rain puddle next to the small road in front of a lake with a small yellow wooden shed and trees on its shore. A beautiful blue sky day. She's black and white with a pink harness and a pink flowered kerchief around her neck. Revna is posing perfectly for her photo on a field of fall colored lichen on top of the foothills of Arctic Valley.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

The edge of the Gabriel Icefall on the Gulkana Glacier with fresh snow last Saturday. Photos and story on my Field Notes Substack: lwpetersen.substack.com/p/snow-glaci... #alaska #hiking #glacier #fall
The edge of a glacier icefall meets a steep cliff of dark gray rock under a deep blue sky. On the left, the ice breaks into a chaos of towering seracs and blocks, blue-white and glowing pale turquoise in the shadowed cracks between them, all dusted with fresh snow. On the right, the fractured rock face drops away in vertical, angular slabs, with snow caught on its ledges. A smooth slope of new snow fills the lower left corner.

A ‘hero’ pilot, plumber and dentist among those who saved flydubai flight to Israel
Swift actions of attacked pilot Smit Machchhar allowed passengers and other off-duty pilots to assist in subduing co-pilot and allowing plane to land safely Smit Machchhar was lying on the floor of the flydubai flight deck, covered with blood, when he managed to click the release to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to gain entry, overpower his attacker and save 174 passengers on board. Moments earlier, Machchhar’s fellow pilot had stabbed him, in an apparent effort to crash the plane which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Machchhar, an Indian citizen from Mumbai, is being treated in a hospital in Saudi Arabia’s north-western city of Tabuk, where the plane landed safely. Continue reading...

This is a photograph of the edge of one of Saturn's rings, looking down from above. Those spiky dark shapes are shadows. Shadows of giant towers of ice and dust grains clumped together that rise up to three *kilometres* above the 10-m thick rings.
A series of bands cross the image from left to right, brighter at the bottom and darkening towards the top. A band of empty space is at the top of the image. About a quarter down from the top is a complex pattern of jagged, spiky shadows cast onto the rings. The icy towers casting the shadows are seen here at a highly oblique angle.

Located in Nagano Prefecture, Matsumoto Castle—famously nicknamed Karasu-jō ("Crow Castle") for its striking black cladding—is one of Japan’s twelve surviving original keeps (genson tenshu) and a designated National Treasure.
Rising majestically out of early morning mists, the five-tiered keep (tenshu) of Matsumoto Castle casts a near-flawless inverted reflection across the glassy surface of its surrounding moat. The bold contrast between dark, lacquered wooden wainscoting and stark white plaster tiers gives the fortress an imposing visual gravity, illuminated by the diffuse, golden-blue light of dawn. In the foreground, two white swans glide effortlessly through the dark water, their gentle wake sending delicate ripples that softly distort the mirrored silhouette of the ancient timber tower. The scene invokes an immersive sensory landscape: the crisp, chilly mountain air of Nagano, the soft lapping of water against stone foundations, the faint scent of damp pine needles and morning fog, and the profound, reverent hush of a historic stronghold awakening to the day.
Originally founded during the late Sengoku period and significantly expanded in the 1590s under Ishikawa Kazumasa and his son Yasunaga, it stands as one of the finest surviving examples of a flatland castle (hirajiro). Uniquely, the architectural complex joins a heavily fortified wartime keep with an open, red-balustraded moon-viewing pavilion (Tsukimi-yagura) added during the peaceful 1630s, physically charting Japan’s transition from feudal warfare to Edo-period stability. The structure exemplifies supreme monozukuri (artisanal mastery and structural craft), featuring complex interlocking timber joinery, mortarless stone wall construction (anozumi), and protective black lacquer wainscoting engineered to withstand both harsh weather and siege warfare.
