This absolute legend.
The Lord of the Mountain, also known as Satori—in his luminous aspect of a blue, horse-legged spirit, with two humanoid faces on his head, and a pair of radiant, feather-like antlers—standing in a lotus pond.

I bet the guy thinks his take is fresh. The people being used as a political football are still getting murdered for who they are but hey, it’s not as many as you think—and that’s important, somehow. An absolute chud. Don’t be like this guy.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

“Coming Back” is a soulful, striking tale, exquisitely brought to life by Zabarsky’s art. The environments reward careful study. #booksky #fantasy #comics
The cover illustration of “Coming Back,” showing the protagonists (two women) inside liquid, spectral hands, over a peach background. The title is written in ornate cursive near the top of the image, beneath the author’s name. The back cover of Zabarsky’s “Coming Back,” featuring an illustration the two protagonists (two women, one standing and one seated) above the back blurb: “Everyone in their village has magic in their bones, and Preet is the strongest of them all. Without any power of her own, how can Valissa ever be worthy of Preet's love? When their home is attacked, Valissa has a chance to prove herself, but that means leaving Preet behind. With no one to turn to, Preet gives in to temptation, breaks the village's most sacred laws, and is rejected from the only home she's ever known.
Divided by different paths, insecurities, and distance, can Valissa and Preet find their way back to each other?”

Jack Kirby, BOTD: 1917
An image of the Watcher by Jack Kirby, and a quote from Kirby beneath it. "I had a guy die on me once, during the war, and
he looked up at me and he said, 'What the hell happened? What happened?' And here I was, just a schmo from the East Side of New York City, y'know, and how do you answer the guy? I told him,'You happened' See? And that was real. It got me to think how valuable human beings are; and at that moment I discovered my own humanity.
In that moment, I discovered everybody else's."

A little bear figurine carved from amber some 6,000 years ago! 🐻❤️ Named ‘Słupcio’ (‘little guy from Słupsk’) through a children’s naming competition! A hole through its torso suggests it was worn or suspended from a cord, perhaps as a hunting amulet. 📷 National Museum in Szczecin #Archaeology
Photo by G. Solecki/A. Piętak of a small figurine of a bear carved out of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange. The display lighting makes the amber glow. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear's belly, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions: Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2cm

It was discovered in Słupsk during peat mining in 1887. According to the museum catalogue record "Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished".

In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was 'Słupcio’, an affectionate diminutive meaning ‘little guy from Słupsk’.

sometimes fantasy authors come up with the concept "there are things older than history and prehistory.. otherworldly things the human mind cant comprehend" and for Lovecraft that means "monster so freaky it drives you insane" and for Tolkien it means "some guy named Tom with an extremely fine wife"

But each deed you do, each act, binds you to itself and to its consequences, and makes you act again and yet again. Then very seldom do you come upon a space, a time like this, between act and act, when you may stop and simply be. Or wonder who, after all, you are.

Every single line did not resonate with me, but on the whole? Emily Wilson’s review of Nolan’s “Odyssey” is insightful, and the people who would rather classicists did not criticize their male protagonists can go eat rocks.

Published in 1834 (Tenpō 5), this charming color woodblock plate originates from Sōnan Gafu (楚南画譜—"Sōnan's Picture Album") by the Edo-based Shijō school master Ōnishi Chinnen (大西椿年, 1792–1851).
The illustration whimsicalizes a scene of anthropomorphic turtles participating in archery target practice. Two turtles stand on the right page with drawn bows, aiming across the gutter toward a large, brilliant green lotus leaf affixed to a bamboo frame serving as a target. On the left, smaller turtles gather fallen arrows, carrying bundles back on their shells in a witty, lighthearted blend of Shijō-style naturalism and playful folklore. Celebrated for its soft bokashi color gradations and fluid line work, Sōnan Gafu remains one of the defining masterpieces of 19th-century Japanese ehon (illustrated books).

But when we crave power over life—endless wealth, unassailable safety, immortality—then desire becomes greed. And if knowledge allies itself to that greed, then comes evil. Then the balance of the world is swayed, and ruin weighs heavy in the scale.
