This is just a snapshot of our cool findings & we're still digging deeper to figure out the most effective ways to change neuroticism in the public :-) S/O to the wonderful CHILL team: @wiebkeb.bsky.social @peterhaehner.bsky.social @chopwood.bsky.social @rosalieandrae.bsky.social @t1lu.bsky.social

3) We used ESM/daily/weekly measures to more closely examine change + test if it occurs in a bottom-up/top-down manner. Cross-time changes predicted each other; BU effects often exceeded TD; & intervention groups had larger coupled effects than the active control (doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/jxg3n_v3)

2) For CHILL, we created groups based on shared mechanisms in TONS to see what was most effective. State strategies = larger initial yet briefer effects; habit strategies = smaller initial declines that grew over time. Targeting behaviors = notable declines across measures (doi.org/10.1177/0956...)

1) We reviewed nonclinical neuroticism interventions & created the Taxonomy of Neuroticism Strategies (TONS). It organizes 19 strategies by whether they target the state/habit/trait level; affective/behavioral/cognitive aspects; and do so in a top-down or bottom-up manner. (doi.org/10.1177/2700...)

As part of a @snsf.ch grant awarded to @wiebkeb.bsky.social, we conducted a series of studies to try and understand what leads to successful neuroticism change & subsequently test these mechanisms in a 6-week smartphone intervention, the CHILL Study

Neuroticism predicts many outcomes, has economic costs exceeding even mental health disorders, & is the #1 B5 trait people want to change The ability to reduce neuroticism stands to be very beneficial, but nonclinical evidence isn't too common & insight on its change mechanisms is even more limited

Since our paper on the Changing How I Live Life (CHILL) Study is now out in Psychological Science (doi.org/10.1177/0956...), here's a LONG overdue post on the intervention work we've been doing the past few years! Have you ever wanted to change one of your personality traits?

In the Wright Personality Lab, we aim to understand individual differences in personality over the lifespan. We quantify change & development in novel ways; examine what underlies different types of change & dynamics thereof; and investigate consequences of different personality conceptualizations.

Overall, our findings offer valuable insight into the conceptual (dis)similarity of personality traits & personality functioning, inform joint theoretical frameworks, and may advance treatment of personality disorders by identifying conditions in which changes may be expected or best captured

What'd we find? (continued) 3) Event perceptions & initial personality levels sometimes predicted heterogeneity in event-related changes, but mostly for mean-level effects Initial personality functioning frequently moderated event-related changes in the Big Five, but the reverse was less common

Amanda J. Wright @ajwright.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
What'd we find? (continued) 2) Life events were related to personality development, but almost exclusively for personality functioning We believe this suggests that personality functioning is more susceptible to external influences than most Big Five traits

Amanda J. Wright @ajwright.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
What'd we find? 1) Unconditional development of all constructs was generally very similar, but there were some interesting trait- & metric-specific differences

Amanda J. Wright @ajwright.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
We had 3 research questions: 1) How do personality functioning and the Big Five traits unconditionally develop over one year? 2) How does their development change in response to life events? 3) Can we predict individual differences in event-related changes?
