THE WRONG WAR
A panel on MS NOW’s Katy Tur Reports today raised a deceptively simple question about Pete Hegseth’s recent religiously infused State of the Force address:
If this message was really intended for the armed forces, why did it need to be televised
That question matters.
Hegseth’s speech sounded at times less like guidance to a pluralistic military than an exhortation to a crusade.
His own language makes the comparison difficult to dismiss:
“Our department is, you might say, putting on the full armor of God, because while we wage physical war, we all know the real battle is spiritual.”
He told military chaplains to “Stand firm. Preach truth. Minister to the flock.” He announced an Office of Religious Affairs reporting directly to him.
None of that proves that Hegseth intends a literal religious war. But it does mean that crusading is a fair description of what his rhetoric evokes.
And the decision to televise it broadens the significance.
An internal speech can instruct a force. A televised speech also performs before a civilian and political audience. That does not establish motive, but it raises the possibility that Hegseth was doing more than setting military policy: he was publicly displaying a particular conception of the American warrior.
That conception carries risks.

The United States military is not a Christian military. Its effectiveness depends upon Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, agnostics and others serving as equals under the same Constitution and command structure.
A Secretary of Defense is therefore doing something consequential when he joins warrior identity, Christian imagery and a struggle between spiritual good and evil in a public address to that force.
Military cohesion requires people of radically different beliefs to trust one another.
Culture war works differently. It divides people into camps.
That is why Hegseth’s rhetoric cuts against his professed goal of strengthening the force. The more he defines military identity through sectarian or culture-war language, the more he risks telling some servicemembers that they stand closer to the institution’s ideal than others.
And there is an even more jarring contradiction.
The United States is already fighting an actual war. Yet its Secretary of Defense is publicly describing the “real battle” as spiritual and devoting substantial attention to reshaping the culture of the force.
The Katy Tur Reports panel put its finger on the communications problem:
Who was this speech really for
Whatever the answer, the Pentagon does not need an internal crusade.
It needs a unified armed force capable of fighting the war it already has.
