Even though my politics couldn't be further, I would have personally agreed with Suella until very recently - I may have a British passport, but I'm not English (though I would never assume it for others). My family are European Ashkenazim, no Sunday roasts & Xmas dinner for us. (1/2)

The far right continue to try to hack British democracy - testing our institutions and seeing if our norms are strong enough to react. Whether it's Reform party donations or attacking free speech, GB News tossing aside neutrality, or masked vigilantes blocking our ports, we *have* to have a response

Senior UK rabbis come out in support of sanctions on Israeli settlements
Spiritual leaders stress diversity of views within Jewish community and warn against inaction on settler violence Prominent British rabbis have backed Ed Miliband’s sanctions on Israeli settlements, warning that the time for inaction on settler violence must come to an end. The intervention comes after the UK’s chief rabbi, the spiritual leader of mainstream Orthodox Jews in the UK, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, described UK sanctions against illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories as a “dark day for British Jews” and warned they could embolden people who “use hatred as a weapon against Jews”. While they are calling to maintain normal trade relations with Israeli settlements in the occupied territories, creating one Jewish state between the River and the Sea, the Board of Jewish Deputies once again complains about protestors who shout "from the River to the Sea". You can't make this up.

Today is a great day to remember that 75% of British Jews see Israeli settlement expansion as a "major obstacle to peace" and 68% said they have a "sense of despair" every time further expansion is approved. (2015 survey)

We are in the midst of a concerted and coordinated attack on British democracy by the far right. They deploy tactics used abroad to overwhelm ill-prepared regulators and decision makers. Without a confident response, we will lose and the most vulnerable among us will suffer the consequences.

In a year when British synagogues have been attacked for the first time in living memory, when Jews talk about living in fear and preferring to and emigrate, the Prime Minister's meeting on communal safety was derailed by those 'leaders' who see their priority as defending West Bank settlements.

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales. Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37. They’re very far from the voice of the people and need to stop being treated as such.

Life in the UK shouldn't be a cycle of waiting for whether the far right have successfully fomented race riots near their most vulnerable neighbours and picking up the pieces from their aftermath. It's a cycle that can't easily be turned off, but it has to be named.

A whole society response to antisemitism will wither if there isn't a whole society effort to make Jewish life about more than antisemitism, the Holocaust & Israel. If the worry is "how to stop Jews wanting to leave the UK", a hollow community is just as damaging as a community under fire.

This antisemitic arson attack is pressure on an already open wound. And because of how news spreads, this will reverberate across the diaspora, making many Jewish communities feel unsafe, unstable, and alone. The only way out of this is with our neighbours. Safety will come from community.

"Let us administer the poison so that Reform doesn't get to" is morally wrong, politically disastrous, and totally ineffective. In a world of political football where 'political courage' only means beating up the vulnerable - never caring for them - every minority group is fair game.
