On AI & water usage, it looks like all US data center usage (not just AI) ranges from 628M gallons a day (counting evaporation from dam reservoirs used for hydro-power) to 200-275M with power but not dam evaporation, to 50M for cooling alone. So not nothing, but also a lot less than golf courses.

Beyond AI Deepfakes & the Uncanny Valley nettricegaskins.medium.com/beyond-a… #AI #deepfakes #history
Projects such as "Conversations with Bina-48" are examples of creative
engagement, which is not only cognitive but also participatory where the learner is a creative agent, producing (or making) generative acts or artifacts. In MidJourney, for example, users can add the "Raw" parameter to their prompts in order to turn off "auto-pilot" and control the final look of their images. Passive consumption and interaction does not necessarily result in becoming more Al literate. A person frequently using generative Al technology is likely more able to spot a deepfake. Artists like Stephanie Dinkins are pushing towards a more expansive use of AI.

Immediately after I demonstrate a cool way to use Al to research something, someone usually asks "But couldn't you do this without
Al?"
It's a weird question in a way. The most honest answer is that I don't generally choose technologies that make my life harder, and so if I am using Al it's because I am getting some benefit from it. It's making me faster, more accurate, more thorough, or getting me to better answers. It's true that sometimes people delude themselves, but I am not a person with no knowledge of research suggesting these tools might help. This is actually my area of expertise.I think about someone explaining the advantages of WordPerfect for DOS back in the day to someone who had never used it. So what can you do with it that you couldn't do with a typewriter? In a way, nothing. The end result is a sheet of paper with words on it. If anything the dot matrix copy looks worse. But you can edit! Sure, says the person, I can do that with an 89 cent bit of white-out. I can print multiple copies! Sure, says the person, ever heard of a photocopier? Maybe you convince the person to use WordPerfect. They try it and complain it takes them 10 times longer to get a simple memo typed. They joke they have to type a bunch of things that are going on a page on a screen and then have to go to a different machine to put them on a page. Efficiency!
And so on. My point here isn't so much whether Al is useful or not, it's more that with any technology, good or bad, there's a point where talking isn't going to help. The people who find it useful will use it, some people won't,

Why language models hallucinate - OpenAI openai.com/index/why-language-model… (new paper) #AI #hallucination
Text Shot: There is a straightforward fix. Penalize confident errors more than you penalize uncertainty, and give partial credit for appropriate expressions of uncertainty. This idea is not new. Some standardized tests have long used versions of negative marking for wrong answers or partial credit for leaving questions blank to discourage blind guessing. Several research groups have also explored evaluations that account for uncertainty and calibration.
Our point is different. It is not enough to add a few new uncertainty-aware tests on the side. The widely used, accuracy-based evals need to be updated so that their scoring discourages guessing. If the main scoreboards keep rewarding lucky guesses, models will keep learning to guess. Fixing scoreboards can broaden adoption of hallucination-reduction techniques, both newly developed and those from prior research.

Green and intelligent: the role of AI in the climate transition www.nature.com/articles/s44168-025-… (excellent) #AI #ClimateTransition
Compared to previous studies, our methodology takes a bottom-up approach, analysing the projected growth of low-carbon technologies and addressing the limitations of other approaches by isolating the specific impact potential of Al within individual sectors.
Furthermore, we estimate the potential increase in emissions due to AI applications (i.e., increasing demand for computing power drives data-centres energy consumption), finding that the emissions reductions due to Al from just these three sectors alone would more than offset the estimated increase in emissions from all of Al's activities (i.e., not just those from Al's contribution to the climate transition). Therefore, we show how the case for using Al for the climate transition is not only strong but imperative.on equitably and sustainably.

Harvard’s Generative AI Policy Is Inequitable | Opinion | The Harvard Crimson www.thecrimson.com/article/2025/9/3… (thoughts from a student) #AI #education #equity
Text Shot: In the same vein, the study also concluded that higher-income, younger, and more educated workers use generative AI more often. I have noticed classmates who attended high schools that taught “AI literacy” and encouraged the use of ChatGPT for academics use these tools more frequently — and also more effectively — in their Harvard classes. Rather than ask the model to write their entire essay for them, they will ask for alternate phrasings of a cliche, critiques of their own words, or a list of counterarguments to test their own logic.

Under the current policy, thirty percent of Harvard students worry their peers use generative AI to gain unfair advantages in class, per a survey commissioned by the Harvard Undergraduate Association. But for my friends who are female or people of color, I’ve observed that this worry isn’t enough to convince them to use it themselves. They tend to avoid the tool as much as they can — even if an instructor permits it.
