What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

Is it Amsterdam? Copenhagen? No, it's Paris! After years of investment, the French capital has one of the best problems a city can have: bicycle congestion. So if Paris has done it, why wouldn't other cities follow? 📸 Such an amazing photo by @jbpssx.bsky.social

Plant-rich diets are the food system's electrification. Petrol cars only see 18-25% of their fuel energy get to the wheels; EVs 87-91%. Heat pumps are 2 or 3 times more efficient. Food has its own combustion engine: a chicken turns about 13% of its feed calories into food, worse than a petrol car.

True. The collective cost of Cloudfare and other screens for automated activity is huge and effectively has ground the Internet to a halt. I am also regularly blocked from Google scholar for "unusual traffic" when there is none.

we went to a highly recommended pizza restaurant in Formia, Italy. the fact that the menu consisted of gorgeously made Italian pizzas with fresh local ingredients, and then also contained this monstrosity called a "pizza Americana" is S-tier trolling by the Italians

Maybe this will finally get politicians to care about climate change: “The brutally hot summer is set to cost the EU economy €180 billion this year — that’s equivalent to roughly 1 percent of GDP, which is all the growth the bloc was expected to generate in 2026, according to new analysis.”

Europe’s scorching summer is erasing its economic growth, says report
Dutch growth is set to be almost entirely wiped out, and France could be pushed into a contraction.

Very helpful presentation! As always, the impact of AI on a specific labor market depends on the market conditions... Demand and supply etc... If AI doesn't affect employment in one market, that doesn't mean it won't affect it in another market... and vice versa. It Depends

The most dangerous thing about AI is not that the machines might one day think. It is that we are being trained, by men with enormous financial gains riding on our acquiescence, to stop thinking for ourselves.

Grid-scale batteries are going in an absolutely wild pace. Every whingey objection to renewables you've ever heard is basically solved by batteries. This is happening whether any of the hopeless dipshits running the US want it or not.

The world is installing grid batteries at a blistering pace
A total of 112 gigawatts of batteries were deployed around the world in 2025 — 10 times the amount added just four years prior.

Bloomberg NEF analysis of global light duty vehicle sales shows that pure internal combustion vehicle sales peaked in 2017. Hybrid sales are increasing slowly, while BEVs are increasing faster. Global PHEV sales are growing slower than global hybrid sales.
