Reminded today of this all-timer from the early days of The Internet
France is bacon

When I was young my father said to me: “Knowledge is
power – Francis Bacon." I
understood it as "Knowledge is power, France is bacon."
For more than a decade I wondered over the meaning of the second part and what was the surreal linkage beteen the two. If I said the quote to someone, "Knowledge is power, France is Bacon," they nodded knowingly: Or someone might say, "Knowledge is power" and I’d finish the quote, "France is Bacon", and they wouldn't look at me like I’d said something very odd, but thoughtfully agree. I did ask a teacher what did “Knowledge is power, France is bacon" mean and got a full 10-minute explanation of the knowledge is power" bit but nothing on "France is bacon". When I prompted further explanation by saying "France is bacon." in a questioning tone I just got a "yes".
Ar 12 I didn't have the confidence to press it further. I just accepted it as something I’d never understand.
It wasn't until years later I saw it written down that the penny dropped.

- Can you pass the salt? - Passing the salt is real work. Probably about a day's worth. Given we're on track to finish lunch today, I probably would budget that for next quarter. - Just pass the damn salt *passes salt* - Okay, you win this one. It actually took three seconds. Listening and learning.

Getting back on the #trailrunning after too much work and too much illness recently. Luckily for Aurora and me, autumn is still showing off, even if we did get wet paws #northdevon
A perky-eared German Shepherd looking out across rolling lush grass fields with semi-grey skiesA shallow stream strewn with chestnut seed cases. A tree silhouettes the boundary between the stream and field, a German Shepherd drinks from the stream, her tail bushy A steep grass hill sloping up and away, covered in dewy grass and rising up to a pale sun made dewy by the cloud. Software engineering is now about being able to make quality decisions around architecture, design, and technology. The actual engineering all along, the code just was in the way.

Them: AI stops you learning anything. Me: Needing to remind myself of how a specific data system works, gets Claude to generate an interactive quiz/nature-guide with every fact cited from the latest docs and even local LLM free-text questions so I can use it on a train with spotty data connection

Beautiful autumn run from home this morning with low sun and chestnuts. It was beautiful to see the steam coming from Aurora's paws as she ran up the hill into the sun #trailrunning #northdevon
A low shot of a forest trail covered in vibrant spiky chestnut seed cases like green alien eggs, sunbeams pouring though the treesA fluffy German Shepherd standing in a forest with her harness on looking classic A stony woodland track going uphill with sunbeams had leaf litter across it. A fluffy-tailed German Shepherd trots away. I couldn't catch the steam coming from her paws

Disagree. PhD opining outside their area of expertise is the warning sign. Displaying your credentials is fine. Some people get pre-judged as 'non-technical' or 'non-expert' without such displays.

Two panel comic. Panel 1: a bat hangs upside-down from a telephone line at sunset. The bat is in front of a billboard advertising the Florida Mega Jackpot, which is valued at $5,318,008 - represented with a digital ticker. Panel 2: the POV flips to the bat’s upside-down perspective, which makes the digital numbers look like they spell “BOOBIES”. The bat appears delighted.

Fair point... 10x cheaper for the flash model, so then our evalutaion becomes a question of the quality we get on those models. I'll give them a try. I get that API prices are going to be more expensive. It just seems that the result is being locked in to Athropic and OpenAI by $$s.

Last week, I tried open weights models for coding compared to my existing method of a Claude Team Premium account. And I'm missing something, or the cost per token difference makes open weights unusable for me. Reviewing one PR on GLM-5.3 cost more than a day of tokens with Claude!

important update
Comic strip from THREEPANELSOUL.COM with the title “Dog Philosophy”. Transcript courtesy of Gemini:

—

Panel 1
A person leans down towards a husky-like dog, looking at it with wide eyes and asking, "WHO'S A GOOD DOG?" The dog is seen from behind, looking up at the person. A thought bubble above the dog reads, "WHOAH, THAT'S A HELL OF A QUESTION."

Panel 2
A closer side view shows the person leaning over and asking, "WHO'S A GOOD BOY?" The dog looks up, contemplating. A thought bubble above the dog reads, "WHO AMONG US CAN TRULY BE SAID TO BE GOOD? WHAT IS GOODNESS?"

Panel 3
The person speaks from off-camera, enthusiastically saying, "YOU ARE!" The dog's eyes go wide in shock as it lets out a huge, happy, open-mouthed grin. A small thought bubble above its head reads, "WHAT." followed by two more thought bubbles: "YES!" and "THIS IS AMAZING!"

I've thought that, but are we underestimating AI's chance of swallowing architecture too on that timeline? Today, architecture is reserved for humans only because the AIs are bad at it. But that's just scale/capability. Product Owner seems like a more durable place for the border to land

We've ended up reviewing specs and docs as humans. Code largely (but not exclusively) via AI. It's imperfect, but pretty good. At least over the duration of a few months. It's close to what you're getting at. Specs are elaborate prompts and we aim to make them hold the review-worthy stuff

In a team! Absolutely. It doesn't seem to be discussed anywhere near as much as individual productivity. Also over real duration and software lifecycle. I've been doing this and plan to blog in our methods soon. If you have read good stuff, please share

AI can now detect, automate, and chain together exploits faster than any human hacker can. That is significant. Which means that the system vulnerabilities once considered not so low hanging fruit are actually very low hanging.

But reading code is increasingly becoming a narrow way of deciding if it's good enough. I care about architecure, shape, and correctness. None of those require reading all the code. AI gives us more test options, more architectural documentation (especially if you build from specs), etc.

I think AI leaves only the hardest and most interesting parts to the engineer. Which is invigorating and exposing all at once. If you were a bad engineer(ing organisation) before, you're going to be turbo-bad with AI. If were good, you're going to have the chance to soar.

This is really good perspective on open weights and the difference in economic model between conventional software (0 cost of goods) vs AI (costs on every inference). Although it does skip over cloud and SaaS being very much the latter camp. stratechery.com/2026/whos-af...

Part 1 of realising we'd got too attached to Anthropic was checking with my immediate team on Opus 5, then wider team, then cross company. Everyone finds it slow, expensive and obtuse. Simply going back to 4.8 has helped loads. Long term, keeping options open with other models and harnesses
