Richard Shindell has a nice song he wrote for his late mother called "Appletown Wonder," and its lyrics are comprised entirely of names of apples, with the addition of a definite article. I can't find a recording of it online, but he's been playing it recently at performances.

The abundant joy is partly why I saw these shows multiple times in different cities (planning to do the same next year). Thanks for this piece!

I have an ancient history with R.E.M. but had no interest in seeing the Shannon/Narducy tribute, until it came to Detroit & went to try to figure out what was going on, for my @salon.com column: www.salon.com/2026/10/07/m...
salon.com
Michael Shannon’s R.E.M. tribute reminded me why I love the band
The actor’s show with Jason Narducy is more than nostalgia — it celebrates the band’s artistry.

In the 90s I lived next to a fire station on State St. in Boerum Hill. I left Brooklyn/NYC in 1999, but I still think about the men from that station who died on 9/11.

Great piece! It reminded me of the existence of the Muze database—I worked at J&R Music World in the early 90s and we had a standalone terminal that we used in conjunction with the Schwann catalog, which I’d also forgotten about.

The Ring doorbell I keep on the ground by my front door to see when Ruby wants inside has started giving me descriptions of what it sees every time it notifies me of movement. We may have just found the one & only good use of AI.
A screenshot of 5 sequential Ring doorbell notifications. Each is black with white text in the middle, describing the motion being detected and when the notification appeared; the blue and white Ring logo on the left; and a snapshot of what’s happening in front of the camera on the left. The notifications read, in order from top to bottom:

Motion at Rubycam
A cat is walking on the porch and standing on a mat. now

Motion at Rubycam
A cat is walking onto a mat on the porch. 20m ago

Motion at Rubycam
A cat is walking on the porch and standing near the wall. 20m ago

Motion at Rubycam
A cat is standing on its hind legs on a porch. 32m ago

Motion at Rubycam
A cat is walking and sitting on the porch. 32m ago
now

My iPhone wallpaper, a close-up picture of my late beloved tortie cat, Betty, and me is visible on the screen, behind the notifications. She looks outward from my lap; I’m leaning my face down to kiss her.

At the bottom of the screen, an indicator appears, showing that my Do Not Disturb is on. It is always on in my mind.

I was in elementary school and made this poster for a school contest, and somehow won second place (maybe there were only two entries?!?). My dad recently discovered it in a family “time capsule,” aka a trunk that hadn’t been opened in decades.
A poster clearly made by a child, depicting a three-tiered white cake with many candles and the dates 1776 and 1976 at the top left and right respectively. At the bottom are the words “Light the candles America, you’re no. 1”

a New Orleans front porch. the house is painted light blue and has a concrete front porch with concrete steps, surrounded by lush greenery. a politely striped calico cat lies on the porch completely and totally at easezoomed in photo of the cat. she's completely stretched out on her side napping in the Sun. her legs are totally limpa view of this cat stretching slightly in her sleep. her two front paws are extended out in front of her and she's retracted her face back in a very squishy way. her little jowls are so fucking cute and her eyes are perfect little closed curvesa close up of the zonked out calico cat
