I dunno. That was Thatcher's path, no? There never was any real societal investment in the idea of a union of values, just markets and business and security etc. And we've seen what "the rest" turned that into, right?

Hi, European here. Little tip if I may: look up and see the bigger picture. Europe is an idea, a joint path forward. Carney got that better than most Brits ever did. If you're only in it for the money, maybe don't bother.

Enkoji Temple, Ichijoji Temple, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto North garden
Framed within the deep, cooling shadows of a traditional shoin interior at Enkō-ji temple, a tranquil portal opens onto the luminous, moss-carpeted northern courtyard. The foreground is anchored by the muted texture of woven tatami mats and dark timber thresholds, establishing a dramatic contrast against the brilliant green of the sunlit garden beyond. To the right, a translucent shōji screen with delicate wooden lattice (kumiko) partitions the foliage into geometric fragments, while the open doorway presents an unobstructed view of stepping stones (tobi-ishi) winding past a rustic, thatched bell shelter (shōrō) nestled beneath vibrant Japanese maples.

Founded in 1601 by Tokugawa Ieyasu in the foothills of Ichijōji in Kyoto’s Sakyō Ward, Enkō-ji originally served as a Rinzai Zen seminary and a pioneering center of early modern print culture, renowned for its early wooden movable-type printing press. The temple’s famed Jūgyū-no-niwa ("Ten Bulls Garden") incorporates the allegorical Zen parable of the ten stages of enlightenment, using moss, flowing water, and seasonal foliage to evoke a journey toward self-realization. Viewed from the interior halls, the garden functions not merely as an exterior landscape, but as an active partner to meditative practice, designed to engage monks and visitors in silent contemplation.

Aesthetically, the composition is a masterclass in gakubuchi teien—the art of using architectural openings as living, changing picture frames. The deep interior gloom directly illustrates Jun'ichirō Tanizaki’s observations in In Praise of Shadows (In'ei Raizan), where shadow (kage) is deployed deliberately to absorb harsh glare and accentuate the glowing intensity of filtered outdoor light. The timber doorway acts as a physical and symbolic kekkai (boundary threshold), isolating the interior sanctuary of quietude (seijaku) from the external world.

Autumn - Kyoto, Japan
Nestled beneath a blazing canopy of Japanese maples (iroha-momiji), a quiet Kyoto sanctuary is enveloped in the fiery crescendo of autumn (kōyō). The composition frames a traditional residence—distinguished by its dark grey ceramic roof tiles (ibushi-gawara) and crisp white plaster walls (shikkuikabe)—partially veiled behind a dense lattice of silver-barked branches and brilliant foliage. Leaves in shades of incandescent crimson, burnt orange, and sunlit ochre cascade down from the upper canopy, contrasted against the deep, evergreen shadows of the surrounding mountain forest. On the flagstone approach (nobe-dan) leading to the shadowed doorway, a lone visitor stands looking upward, wrapped in quiet contemplation beneath the autumn arbor.

This autumnal tableau reflects the deep-rooted cultural tradition of momijigari ("hunting autumn leaves"), a seasonal pilgrimage celebrated in Japan since the Heian period. In Kyoto’s historic districts—such as Sagano, Higashiyama, and Arashiyama—architectural design has long been tailored to honor the natural terrain. Residences and temple sub-complexes utilize low rooflines and natural building materials to yield visually to the surrounding garden and forest. The grey clay tiles and dark timber framing act as a neutral, grounded foundation, allowing the fiery, short-lived transformation of the maples to dominate the visual landscape.

Through the golden road, Shiga, Japan. Photography by Takk B on 500px
Bathed in the warm, low-slanting light of late autumn, this mesmerizing photograph captures the famous Metasequoia Avenue (Metasequoia Namiki) in Makino Town, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. Over five hundred dawn redwoods line a two-kilometer stretch of road, their soaring crowns arching inward to create a luminous, incandescent canopy of rust-gold needles. Photographer Takk B frames the avenue along a dramatic central axis, following the undulating asphalt as it dips and rises toward a distant vanishing point. Cast across the road surface, the low sun projects a rhythmic pattern of long, dark shadows—creating a bold, striped alternation of light (hikari) and shade (kage) that recalls the delicate geometry of traditional bamboo blinds (sudare).

Botanically and culturally, the avenue represents a celebrated chapter in modern Japanese landscape design. First planted in 1981 as part of a regional agricultural development project, the dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) holds profound ecological significance as a "living fossil" (ikita kaseki), believed extinct for millions of years until living stands were rediscovered in central China in the 1940s and re-established throughout Japan. Although a 20th-century creation, the golden avenue honors a ancient design tradition: the creation of monumental tree-lined approaches (namiki) that historically defined sacred shrine approaches (sandō) and major feudal highways like the Nikkō Kaidō. Here, modern municipal planning and arboriculture converge, turning a simple transport corridor into a living architectural sanctuary.

Aesthetically, the composition is a masterclass in seasonal attunement (shun) and the contemplation of kōyō (autumn foliage). The fiery amber hue represents a brief, transitional climax—a fleeting fortnight in late November before the delicate, needle-like leaves fall, blanketing the ground and leaving behind stark winter silhouettes.

The Poetess Ono no Komachi, Shojo Shokado, 17th Century, Cleveland Museum of Art: Japanese Art
Executed by the 17th-century monk and master calligrapher Shōjō Shōkadō (1584–1639), this hanging scroll in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art depicts Ono no Komachi, the legendary 9th-century Heian courtier and sole female figure among the Six Poetic Geniuses (Rokkasen). Belonging to the traditional genre of kasen-e (immortal poet portraits), the composition seamlessly pairs visual portraiture with literary art. Floating above her in Shōkadō’s celebrated, fluid kana calligraphy—a hand that earned him renown as one of the "Three Brushes of the Kan'ei Era" (Kan'ei no Sanfude)—is Komachi's signature waka poem from the Kokin Wakashū: "Hana no iro wa / utsurini keri na / itazura ni / waga mi yo ni furu / nagame seshi ma ni" ("The color of the flowers has faded away in vain, while in idle contemplation my life has passed in longing").

Sartorially, Komachi is portrayed in the sweeping, formal grandeur of Heian aristocratic court dress (jūnihitoe), reclining in a moment of quiet, melancholic reverie. Her uppermost robe features a pale cream ground decorated with crisp, four-petaled floral rosettes (hanabishi) intertwined with fluid, sinuous stream motifs that visually echo the passage of time. Beneath this outer garment, the overlapping sleeve cuffs and hem reveal the deliberate, harmonious color gradation known as kasane no iro me—a classical court tradition where exposed fabric edges of moss green, soft sky blue, and gold brocade were paired to reflect seasonal poetry and refinement. The entire ensemble is framed by a brilliant vermilion silk lining (momi) spreading outward in sharp angular folds, creating a dynamic geometric foundation beneath her cascading, unadorned jet-black hair (kurokami) and pale, meditative profile.
