It's why I like and recommend books like @alomshaha.bsky.social "Why don't things fall up". Esp to remind teachers (and non-specialists) about topics and the depth of knowledge needed as a teacher.Going back in the thread I do feel sometimes teachers rely on powerpoints rather than KNOWING the topic

It's Parkin time of year again (someone explain to the Southerners who have never heard of it) and there is a plethora of different recipes, so of course it needs a spreadsheet to compare them. Luckily Felicity Cloake and Linda's Auntie Brenda just about agree.

This is why I worry about Duolingo. Their developers have clearly never done any assessment theory about the nature of distractors

Did you know (and apologies if you do, its just a fact I love) that in Victorian times some views were deemed so beautiful that people might faint if they looked at them directly, so viewing places (like Claife viewing tower on windermere) had mirrors so that you could consider the view safely

Currently listening to "Hatful of hollow;" We visited Liverpool at the weekend and stayed in the Sefton Park/Smithdown Rd/Ullet Rd area and I was transported back to my student days at the Uni when I would come home and play newly acquired vinyl (incl this) after lectures. indie Dad dancing

Well I've done it. I have read and finished Middlemarch. Bought at the beginning of July...so it has taken two months. It took a while to get into. It is quite slow. It gets better so keep at it and the final 1/5 moves along nicely to the denouement.
The cover or a copy of Middlemarch showing an oil painting of a young woman dressed in white reading a book.

I was allowed to use the adult section of our local library when we visited in what we would now call Y6. I had read most of the James Bond books by the time I was 13 or 14 and loved them.I have them in glorious 70s paperback.Maybe I need to revisit them too.(not my books but they look like this)

On my return from choir rehearsal my wife greeted me, beside herself with joy. Was she somehow pleased to see me? No.... we have been visited by not one but two hedghogs. There are now four of us in this marriage.

For #nationalpoetryday I wrote this in response to a poem by @johndredge.bsky.social . @imcmillan.bsky.social suggested a slight edit.
Wonder no more

Light waves of all colours from our sun
End their cosmic journey scattered
by myriad mini-glitterball molecules
in our atmosphere
Blue light is scattered more
Red and yellow less
Look up the sky is blue
Only at sunset do the red and yellows make their mark
These rays, working through more of the atmosphere,
to colour our evening sky

Ancient bacteria in their search for usable energy
Turned to sunlight.
Primitive proteins found that absorbing blue and red light worked best
To strip hydrogen from water.
Change by tiny change chlorophyll evolved,
bacteria became plants became trees
the sun’s unabsorbed green light reflected from leaves
Look up trees are green

Our massive sun draws towards it
From the infinities of space countless hydrogen atoms
In the crucible of its gravity, they are forced together to make helium
No laughing matter atomic fusion
Look up we feel the emitted heat

The sun will outlast us, our children and grandchildren
Even our grandchildren’s grandchildren
But at some point, the hydrogen fuel will run out
Sulking the sun will swell,
Cool from white hot to merely red hot
A red giant, swallowing our planet
Eventually in an eye wateringly bright explosion
It will collapse into itself by the hubris of its own gravity
Until it sees out the universe as a tiny cool white dwarf.

Some might rather wonder
and continue to ponder
on the beauty of our planet
I prefer to know and tell
The wonder is that we do know
And can even tell what happened billions of years in the past
And can tell what will happen billions of years into the future.
Wonderful

Whilst it is unfair to target the players (beyond their exhorbitant wages which have been possible due to alleged dodgy dealing) make all 11 play every match in the club mascot kit.

I was pondering on that yesterday whilst remembering an early form of "meta-glasses." Whilst this is an advert from the US the English ones mentioned quaint things like "postal orders" and "allow 28 days for delivery" 😂

I looked for this earlier in the week when @laurenlaverne.bsky.social was doing her Six of the Best to mark 50years of U2. The only time I saw them in concert and of course with this internet thing you can now find the complete set list.

I like that you talk about forces of attraction in Y7 as many models don’t. I use these. If the ball is moving fast enough the Velcro won’t stick ( children seem to get this idea) Velcro=forces of attraction not perfect but it starts us off

#9/11 25th Anniversary; We visited Ground Zero last year. I found it surprisingly moving, seeing the names, the commemoration and the streets where we had watched it enfold. For all those who died that day and the brave rescuers.
A close up of a rose placed in commemoration in the name of a victim of the 9/11 terrorist act in New York with a picture of the skyscraper which now replaces the twin towers.

Decided to finish off my bedtime book in the afternoon.Having read it I now discovered that, though I first read the first two aged about 12,I had no recollection of this book at all. Like Tombs of Atuan this is a book that you can read both as a child and as an adult. Not sure if it is stand alone.
