Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]
Model-relative sea surface temperature anomalies for November 2026–January 2027. The supplied grid is displayed without added smoothing or coastal filling. Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. This map does not establish an operational ENSO category.

thanks! that's something I think would be straightforward(ish) to explore with a power analysis, looking at the value of additional data (happy to chat more about this). and yes, so many North American species "end" on the map probably because of the steep decline in sampling—it's a huge issue.

Alexa Fredston @afredston.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
in the world of species distribution modeling I think there's a sense that we now have a ton of data and need to focus on model development. but for estimating spatial extremes like range edges, most of those data aren't useful, and I agree we are still in a data-limited situation.

a simple simulation suggests that we need decades of data to reliably estimate whether shifts have occurred, in all but the fastest range-shift scenarios. I did not model the power to detect the correct *rate* of shift, which will require even more data.

everyone in global change biology (including me) makes up how they measure range edges, and range edge shifts. these methods often (not always!) agree about whether edges have shifted in space, but they diverge massively in estimates of range fluctuations (i.e., residual SD) + rate of edge shift

good morning. I strongly suspect that we don't really know (or agree) what geographic ranges are, and therefore, our estimates of how species' ranges are shifting in the Anthropocene are uninterpretable. I wrote something about this: doi.org/10.1111/2041... and I'll share the main findings...
