The Security Assessment for Evaluating Risk (SAFER) program has been operating quietly in Ontario’s jails since early 2021. SAFER inputs a prisoner’s personal information—including arrests, charges, and disciplinary records—into an algorithm. The program assigns each prisoner a score from 0 to 100 that determines whether they’ll be placed in minimum, medium, or maximum security detention.

Critics of the program argue that the data that SAFER is fed is racially biased: they cite documented patterns of police and courts handing out more severe punishments to Black people because of anti-Black racism. SAFER then uses that data to make harsher risk assessments of Black people who are sent to jail.

The ministry responsible for Ontario’s prisoners agrees. It wrote in internal training documents viewed exclusively by The Breach that “Indigenous and racialized individuals face systemic discrimination in our justice system … As a result, assessments like SAFER would likely contribute to the overrepresentation of Indigenous inmates in maximum security.”

Excited to give this talk next week (significantly less excited that I need to actually make the slides this week). You don't need to use AI to be a good software engineer.
Title: You don't need to use Al to be a good software engineer.

Author info: Anissa is a software engineer in the Computational and Information Systems Lab (CISL) at NSF NCAR. Her background is in computational mathematics and science and her current work focuses on creating computational and visualization tools for earth systems science on the GeoCAT team.

Abstract: With claims like "large language models are revolutionizing software development" everywhere, it might feel developers need to integrate LLM products into their workflows or risk falling behind. As we navigate questions about how to use Al responsibly, the case for rejection is often overlooked.

This talk will focus on the inherent limitations of LLM products by examining the foundational computational concepts behind modern Al and present a case for rejecting these tools in scientific software development.

Also, in an article describing the incredibly foreseeable consequences of LLMs, describing them as "weird and alien" misses the mark. LLMs are not "weird and alien", they're just incomprehensibly massive in the content they steal to create. 1/2
Quote from article:

Steven Adler, a former OpenAI safety researcher, said that even now, years into the AI boom, the large language models behind chatbots are still “weird and alien” to the people who make them. Unlike coding an app, building a LLM “is much more like growing a biological entity,” Adler said. “You can prod it and shove it with a stick to like, move it in certain directions, but you can’t ever be — at least not yet — you can’t be like, ‘Oh, this is the reason why it broke.’”"
