Breakfast cereal mascots being twisted into gibbering horrors
The Frosted Mini Wheats mascot. It too has bulging eyes, and a rictus grin besides with a top row of too-human teeth showing. It looks like shredded wheat that wants to wear a person's skin.

A cute little patch somebody designed of Kirby mixed with Koffing from Pokemon. He's looking happy and buoyant as ever while emitting green noxious gas from his purple, craggy frame

I could see LLM procedural generation helping to fill in the gaps and add perceived depth with richer interactions "in the small", working within the constraints of a designed world and narrative. But truly open possibility spaces are much more of a niche market than most assume.

A critical element of games culture today is that there's a common in-group experience. For the same reason nobody wants to hear about the dream you had last night, a unique and irreproducible game experience has diminished cultural value.

From the Simpsons' Treehouse of Horrors, the scene where the repair guy looks at the back of the murderous Krusty doll and remarks "yep here's your problem, someone set this thing to evil" while gesturing to a switch labeled EVIL / GOOD. I've changed EVIL to say BAD in the image because that's how I've made this Simpsons reference relevant to the topic at hand. It's not much, but it's honest work.

I'll say this for Masto, though: I had some genuinely lovely interactions with tech folks over there. Really smart, quirky, engaged community while it lasted, which the hustle-culture set never stepped foot into AFAIK. Bsky much wider world. For better and worse, as always.

I think this is the thing: people want the efficiency and simplicity of a monopoly power without the bad incentives. We want Google back when it was "good" but with consumer leverage. An offramp that might be high friction in practice provides a kind of fragile peace between biz and users.

And as I remember it's not just at point of creation! There's an ongoing "maintenance" concern in that, if you want to exercise your right to migration, you need to do so before the insurance goes bad/bankrupt and shutters. True of bsky PDS hosting too, but the PDS being a simpler component helps.

Mastodon isn't a "social network" in the way people conceive of the term. Bluesky for better or worse is an actual social network that happens to invest in an open protocol providing a data portability / interop hedge against their own monopoly power.

And some of the discourse really was that stupid. But there was a more cogent argument under that heading re: the moderation and data control story. The technical underpinnings just make it really challenging to scale beyond small neighborhoods with limited connections.

I was on Mastodon before here, and there was a fair amount of criticism of the form "users don't care about federation." At the time, I took this to mean "users don't care about linux-nerd implementation details, they want good UX" which I found reductive and short sighted
