🔇 🔇 🔇 My book, Deep Unlearning, is now available for preorders! I don't know how people write so many books because this one took a lot out of me. It turns out, I had a lot to say 😂, with editors cutting out 50k of my words 🫣 ✴️ You can now preorder it at www.simonandschuster.com/books/Deep-U....
Cover of my new book, Deep Unlearning: The Rise of AI and The Radicalization of a Tech Idealist.

There are two concentric circles in the book, the left being circuits in black an white, and the right being a bunch of dots with orange accents. The cover background is cream. And the words are written in black except for "Un" which is in orange.

One of the most despair-inducing moments is talking to "non-scholars/activists" about AI. Their delight and amazement make me feel like Cassandra, warning of the labor exploitation and copyright theft propping up this shiny facade, only to be met with blank stares and or indifference

"A pesar de que trabajamos para estas grandes empresas, somos la mano de obra barata y descartable para ellos": Oskarina Fuentes frente al Parlamento Europeo junto a @milamiceli.bsky.social hablando sobre la extrema precariedad de los trabajadores de datos de la industria de la IA 📢 #dataworkers
conference: “(Un)Artificial Intelligence: Workers Behind the Machine”

Artificial Intelligence, before answering all our questions and even driving our cars, needs to be trained by real humans. These people, called microworkers, constitute an unknown behind-the-scenes workforce. These microworkers will come from all over the world (including Syria, Colombia, the US, Spain and Italy), to give testimony to the European Parliament on their working conditions and provide us with valuable insights into the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and the labour force behind it, highlighting the voices of data workers across Europe and beyond.

This event is co-organised with esteemed researcher Antonio Casilli, Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Paris and author of the notable publication En attendant les robots.

AI is neither Artificial nor Intelligent. Behind the sleek algorithms are real human workers—tagging, labeling, moderating—often underpaid and exploited. The intelligence? It’s extracted labor. The artificial? Just a narrative to obscure the human cost.

One of the most frustrating things about academia is in addition to the low salaries, being expected to front your own money for travel, and then being treated with suspicion when you request reimbursement—like you're pulling some elaborate heist.
