I'm a professor at an elite private SLAC, what if writing isn't so important to my students because they have other career paths and what if while it may be important to your students, I don't really care. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/o...

Opinion | I’m a College Professor. Writing Isn’t as Important as We Think.
If I do not treat writing as essential for achieving thought, it is not clear why I should force my students to.

Currently reading two book manuscripts that *I think* augur a new academic genre. Something like Quit Lit but you can't quit. There you stay, in a broken academy, working. The system can't reproduce itself or you, but there you are. Such humor, pathos, and wit. Any existing titles seem like this?

Serious question for those who have published books: how many AI-produced invitations/solicitations do you get DAILY about your work? I seem to receive several a day, at least. Tiresome.

Good news, I guess, except that for years I went to the US OPEN and I never paid 100 bucks for a seat. More like $50 or $60. Also it's held in a public park. www.tennispanorama.com/mayor-mamdan...

True? "Those who study Foucault, particularly straight men, are statistically more likely to adopt Foucault’s aesthetic—the shaved head, the wire-rim glasses, certain gay affectations, white turtlenecks—than are Marxists to emulate Marx’s mien or psychoanalysts to fashion themselves after Freud."

"What is required of any book is that an unfolding the author’s thought and a totality of the author’s thought are present simultaneously." I wrote this in a specific context of reading someone else's work, but I think it's true of most non-fiction. Is it?

In the 16th century finance meant how much debt one could carry before death, i.e., the "fin" or "the end." Looks like we're heading back in the direction. How much debt can you accrue before the health insurance company lets you die? Guess we'll find out soon.

If someone had told me two years ago, there would be a market for contacting authors with AI summaries of their book to ask them for small consulting and publicity fees, I'd have thought they were nuts. Now I get three or four of these a day. Each AI summary, falsely unique in its own way.
