Our response to the government's announcement of an import ban on goods from Israeli settlements.

jewish leadership council
The government's increasingly punitive and unbalanced approach towards Israel does nothing to advance peace, risks harming Jewish life in Britain, and damages the UK's relationship with a vital ally.
The Foreign Secretary says that he will not accept the destruction of the two-state solution. Yet, through the trade ban announced today, the government is placing the overwhelming responsibility for that on Israel. There can be no genuine partner for peace while the Palestinian Authority continues its 'pay to slay' policy, handing monthly stipends to the families of terrorists, and while its education system incites violence and antisemitism. If the government is genuinely committed to upholding international law, it must be even handed and recognise that decades of Palestinian terror has been a major contributor to the current situation.
A ban on trade with goods from settlements also risks becoming a de facto boycott of Israel, giving legitimacy to those who reject Israel's very existence.
Indeed, today's announcement is not about advancing peace or the two-state solution. The government is simply yielding to pressure from the most extreme elements of British society. They will continue to push the government to take increasingly radical action against Israel, to the detriment of peace in the Middle East and community relations in the UK. The left-wing and Islamist extremists the government is trying to appease will never be satisfied, and no responsible government should bend to their demands.
In the run up to the High Holy Days, placing this increased target on British Jews is deeply irresponsible.

Na’amod spoke to @haaretzcom about the @jlc.uk and Board of Deputies' disgraceful response to reports of UK government measures to sanction trade with illegal Israeli settlements.
Na'amod, an anti-occupation Jewish group, said it "welcomed" the measures reported this week, saying "it is the minimum response" to Israel's ongoing unlawful actions.Na'amod, in a statement to Haaretz, said: "British restraint in the last three years alone has coincided with 68 new settlements, record settler violence, tens of thousands of Palestinians forcibly displaced and a land-registration regime Israeli ministers describe as annexation. This restraint has a map and a death toll."The group also rejected the Board of Deputies' argument that focusing "narrowly" on Israeli government actions "fuels a climate of hatred [...] towards British Jews."

"That argument only works if British Jews are answerable for what Israel does. We reject that premise absolutely," Na'amod said."The harsh reality is none of these actions have had any influence on the situation on the ground," the JLC said, warning that "broad, untargeted measures may inadvertently become a wider boycott of Israel."

Na'amod rejected that argument as well, saying that "contrary to the Jewish Leadership Council's statement, Britain is not 'singling out' Israel. Britain already restricts trade with illegally occupied Ukrainian territory. What is exceptional is that Britain has spent years applying a different standard to illegal Israeli settlements."

jon ronson has written a book about men who go crazy online and he's dedicated an entire chapter to graham linehan. graham is not going to like the observer review.
Ronson’s account of Graham Linehan is another harrowing tale of a man’s life ruined by the internet. Linehan was a beloved comedy writer, co-creator of Father Ted, and a prolific presence on Twitter, where he was well liked and respected. Then, in 2013, something began to shift, when an episode of his sitcom The IT Crowd, first broadcast in 2008, was repeated. In it, a man discovers his girlfriend is transgender and a brawl breaks out between the two. Viewers did not like the display of violence nor the supposed implication that the trans woman was “really” a man, underlying maleness bursting forth uncontrollably once she is angry.

Linehan responded to criticism with polite bafflement, then defensiveness, and finally overt anger. He began to research transgender issues and developed a singular obsession with the topic, which has since gone on to comprehensively destroy his career and personal life. Linehan, who believes trans activism and indeed ordinary trans existence pose an existential threat to women, talks of little else (except, these days, a fervent pro-Israel stance). He tweets near-constantly, cloaking his obsession with supposed concern for the wellbeing of cisgender women, but he does not balk at aggressively insulting those women who disagree with him.Linehan’s self-ignited ruin stopped being satisfying for even his opponents to watch a while back, and now is only profoundly depressing. Ronson was once a good friend, but in refusing to endorse Linehan’s beliefs about transgender issues, he was added to his long list of his enemies. In The Castle, Ronson speaks to him directly, having been attacked countless times on Linehan’s social media feed. One thing that becomes clear, beyond the truly abject state of Linehan’s wellbeing, is that he is able to persevere with his campaign because he has convinced himself he is battling the greatest danger currently at play in the world. At one point he suggests that there are so many fewer serial killers nowadays because all the sociopaths have migrated to the internet in order to argue with him about trans issues instead. It reminded me of religious protesters screaming at me in Dublin once, as I walked into a reproductive-rights clinic that provided information about abortion. I was furious, but then forced myself to think about how I would feel or act if I truly, earnestly believed that every abortion is equivalent to the murder of a child. That might, indeed, drive me mad.

The Linehan chapter is brilliant: insightful, candid and moving. I’m still not convinced that any broader crisis of masculinity or male purpose had much to do with Linehan’s downfall, though. He wasn’t at a loss or empty of purpose when he began his campaign. He didn’t turn to vitriol because he didn’t have anything else to do. His case is, if anything, notable for involving a man with an enviable life and abundant success throwing it away for reasons that to many in the outside world may seem obscure or deranged.
