Should this be a start of my series where "learning things the hard way is still fun" because I intentionally rejected the gemini summary and instead found a blog post of someone who solved my problem lol

Came across this cool terminal trick to batch renaming files on macos: benfrain.com/batch-rename... My use case was having a bunch of `MyFeatureV2_` files that I wanted to rename to `MyFeature_` now that the old version was deprecated. Super quick and easy.
Macos terminal command to batch rename files that contain MyFeatureV2 in the name to just MyFeature.

Command is: autoload -U zmv; zmv '(**/)(*)MyFeatureV2(*).kt' '$1$2MyFeature$3.kt'

'AI' is Not a Tool

It was kind of funny because one person said "we don't have zoom controls on native" and I believed them until I was flipping through the code one day and saw the conditional there. It was a great reflection in 1) not realizing a "missing" feature and 2) how many helpful things are off by default.

So glad I found this! Just read the recent one on gesture controls - and I recently had to do some work around a map and zoom controls actually. The zoom controls were off by default (curious to hear your thoughts on that) but could be turned on via a11y settings.

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

There's a defeatist vibe rn and I think there's an inevitability feeling washing over us. There is no inevitability. If you're in a position to speak up against the direction the industry is taking, I'd say now is the time to do that. I certainly try because I cannot be fired and it does help!

Again, I will keep saying that it doesn't have to be this way. I believe we *could* have ai assistants that are more secure. But that's not what's happening. Not because they're fundamentally bad, but because the people building them don't want that.

Greatest trick AI leaders have pulled is convincing many people—especially influential people in govt, media, and business—that their software is intelligent, independent, yet never culpable. Humans build it, humans deploy it, but no one bears responsibility for the things that happen when they do.

Am I crazy or does the graph (number of active users) have absolutely nothing to do with the point?

But isn't that Aurimas' point - that using AI allows people to produce code they don't truly understand? What do you think will be the consequences (if any) of that over time?

Adam McNeilly @adammc.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
It definitely does not make you a bad programmer, it makes you human. However, it's a skill you could improve if you wanted to, or a skill you could lean on a coworker or friend to support. That collaboration is, ultimately, how the tech industry got to where it is today in the first place.

Adam McNeilly @adammc.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
"Waste of water" is just the tip of the multitude of consequences though. It erodes communication between us, it removes the friction required to learn, it's even reducing people's empathy for each other, and for what? To write some portions of code faster? What did we gain from that speed?

Adam McNeilly @adammc.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
I simply do not feel like I do more, nor better, with it. The cognitive load of thinking about how to prompt it, waiting for it to run, and then validating its output on things I already know how to do is both unnecessary stress and slower than if I went ahead using the skills I already have.

Mastodon post from Jake Wharton:

As of today, the Lysine projects (OkHttp, Okio, Retrofit, and the SQL Delight family) have a contribution policy that forbids LLM usage for creating code and for PR/issue descriptions and comments.
There is an exception for translation assistance provided you disclose its use.
If you choose to use LLMs locally for research, analysis, and/or experimentation we can't stop you. But for contributing we require you to write the code, and for our interactions to be with you.

If you asked engineers 5 years ago what the worst part of our job was, I think most people would say code review. Now, we review Claude's code, send it to someone else to review, and then we review their Claude's code, and all the sudden our whole job is literally the worst part lmao

Given how little impromptu learning happens now in our industry, I took a leap and messaged a coworker and asked if they wanted to help me rubber duck a problem. They got on the call and told me it made their entire morning. We spent 20 minutes talking through a naming convention. We are so back.

So I asked each of them why they used something that had obvious negative consequences to them. The answer was a variation of corporate and peer pressure to not be left behind or not hitting internal metrics on token usage. It was devastating to hear people say they don't have true autonomy.

At Tuesday's meetup, I was asked a question about agentic coding and I responded "I'm the wrong person to ask." When they wanted to know why, I said it's because I don't use it. They were shocked at first, but then admitted "I feel like it's making me dumber." I heard this from at least two people.

I am exasperated with people accusing programmers of "gatekeeping" programming. We were practically dragging people through the gate. Do you know why a mindless LLM can tell you so much great programming information? It's because we've been sharing that information for free online for decades.

I am seething! Like don't get me wrong, ultimately I was able to schedule the appointment for a specific recall and even change the time it suggested, which is neat, but at least be real with me. Don't present as a human being when I can tell after a handful of sentences you're not.

I just called to schedule a service appointment for my car, and they used an automated system which is FINE but if you're going to do that, at least say it up front. Don't say "I'm Alex" and talk to me like a human being when the whole interaction is clearly automated and rigid.

If you're a manager at any company mandating LLM use, I'd recommend you try to ask your directs how they *really* feel about LLM adoption, promising to shield them from retaliation. Because it can be *very* costly for one's career to criticize LLMs right now. Empathize with your workers.
