Companion Blocks & Extensions are ready for testing in Kotlin 2.5.0-Beta1. I've spent a good chunk of the last months working on this feature, so I'm very excited for the experimental release. blog.jetbrains.com/kotlin/2026/...

Fuck. You. Instagram/Meta. Niki and I hand-drew over REAL pictures. I spent HOURS working on graphics in After Effects doing mattes, pixel pushing, and adjusting music MYSELF. This wasn't even fucking enhanced. Apparently, the only mistake I made was using your platform to publish it. #FuckAI

It's an odd feeling running into a useful github repo and wondering if you learned more from it than the person who had Claude write it for them

Blood boiling. Not a good look for OpenAI or Greg Brockman here: "ah nice" in response to "a hack to get around nytimes paywall" in his efforts "to scrape" The Times website. After many points on his bragging about OpenAI's substitution for news. /4

I have heard this so much lately (also in the recent Pangram episode of Oxide and Friends) that I have started using AI tools more just so that I can better develop this sixth sense for AI prose they describe.

Okay, here's my first (published) attempt to write about what it's been like on the other side of the layoffs at Cash App (and all of Block): www.billjings.net/posts/title/... The answer is that it's been weird! Alienated, but not alone.

I think AI might be an inflection point that shows how much our programming communities have diverged. Lilley Brinker is 100% right here, but ~nobody in Androidland would +1 this sentiment. I hear no stories of increasing quality. We get pressured to do more with less, and to maintain others' slop.

I really can't say how much I disagree with this idea. It sounds quite intellectual, but it amounts to saying that Vegas preferences supersede church preferences, or that cookie preferences supersede vegetable preferences. An A/B test just doesn't tell you what your customer wants!

Given how little impromptu learning happens now in our industry, I took a leap and messaged a coworker and asked if they wanted to help me rubber duck a problem. They got on the call and told me it made their entire morning. We spent 20 minutes talking through a naming convention. We are so back.

I feel like such a narc when I appreciate some of the ways that Lurie has changed SF for the better, but then I see this and I'm like "Augh Lurie sucks" I have an easier time imagining Lurie riding a unicycle around town than imagining him crossing Target or Amazon in the slightest way

One of my pet peeves: mocking people or factions who are fucking it up. People learn things by fucking up! So if something is self sustaining through the failures (whether that be AI driven development, or the Trump movement, or whatever), eventually they will figure it out.

If you think of yourself as a professional, as having a vocation, you should also be rooting for this antitrust suit. Observant SWEs know what the Ellisons do to their businesses already. Like @bcantrill.bsky.social said, don't get angry at them. They do what they do! Just don't let them do it.

The broadest critique of American-style big iron SaaS LLMs has always been about centralization of power, which inevitably privileges big players over small. And now, in the name of security and defense, same for Anthropic as was the case for Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Google, IBM, Standard Oil...

I think Charity lost me at the last turn into the finish line. Managerial cover and funding are all supportive of growth. But "straight with your employees that these are mandatory skills moving forwards" isn't cover, it isn't help, it's a straitjacket.

Rich diagnostics is something I've wanted to work on for a while and takes a lot of inspiration from Rust. Same focus on detail and bouncing you in the right direction, but now with markup and diagrams! This works safely in the IDE as well, where IDE builds will gracefully fall back to plain ascii.
