It’s not a silver bullet but bringing more empty homes back into use can help solve the housing crisis. Today, we’re announcing strengthened powers for councils to take control of long-term empty homes and use them to house families in need.

I’m delighted to see this announcement include EDMO reform to tackle empty properties. I campaigned for years for this at both WCC and the LGA. It should help make Empty Dwelling Management Orders actually usable, creating a real tool in the arsenal of local authorities to bring homes back into use.

Having a strong pan-London approach for freight consolidation is crucial to managing a world where personal car use falls but congestion remains high. Also speeding up lane rental approvals which are taking way too long. Both would significantly help with bus speeds alongside bus priority measures.

Delighted our Social Housing Bill passed its Second Reading this week. At its heart are radical reforms to the Right to Buy to protect precious social rented homes and incentivise the building of more of them. The Bill also gives greater protections to tenants who are victims of domestic abuse.

As Jim says if you want to make a meaningful difference to dodgy shops (e.g Candy Stores) on the high street you need to give HMRC (plus Companies House and other existing institutions) the funding they need to do the job. It’s not magic that’s required; it’s better functioning bureaucracy.

Creating a genuine system local authorities to retain more of the proceeds of local growth has been talked about for years and not really achieved. Would have real value if it can finally happen. (Also the perennial London reminder that currently the strategic authority is not constituted from LAs)

Aligning key public service boundaries is a really important step and needs to be thought about carefully. At the moment in London for example none of the key geographies align with the constellations of LAs for NHS, Police, homelessness or growth/jobs subregional partnerships all being different.
