One of the things I find most bizarre about the lingering sympathy for Russia on the crank left is that Russia's long history of imperialism *doesn't* get framed as the dreaded 'settler colonialism' - even though it clearly was. Did it not count because Russia conquered by land rather than sea?

It’s not a silver bullet but bringing more empty homes back into use can help solve the housing crisis. Today, we’re announcing strengthened powers for councils to take control of long-term empty homes and use them to house families in need.

I’m delighted to see this announcement include EDMO reform to tackle empty properties. I campaigned for years for this at both WCC and the LGA. It should help make Empty Dwelling Management Orders actually usable, creating a real tool in the arsenal of local authorities to bring homes back into use.

Having a strong pan-London approach for freight consolidation is crucial to managing a world where personal car use falls but congestion remains high. Also speeding up lane rental approvals which are taking way too long. Both would significantly help with bus speeds alongside bus priority measures.

More officers. Smarter tech. Record funding. Fewer places for phone thieves to hide.

Where residents have been balloted (Church Street/Ebury) on the basis of schemes delivering a certain number of social homes, something that unlocked £120m in GLA grant, must not be rowed back on.

Median household income in Westminster is 65k, so the current cap is already 10k over what the average household earns so would move intermediate housing away from its purpose for key workers. On social clearly this is deeply disappointing but always likely to happen if the Tories came back.

Delighted our Social Housing Bill passed its Second Reading this week. At its heart are radical reforms to the Right to Buy to protect precious social rented homes and incentivise the building of more of them. The Bill also gives greater protections to tenants who are victims of domestic abuse.

It's not surprising that the Conservatives are digging in against the West Bank sanctions package despite where UK public opinion sits (even-narrowly- amongst Tory voters) but it is incumbent upon them to set out what they would do differently that would have a meaningful impact on the ground.

We’ve seen this movie before. It ends with homelessness, Temporary Accommodation costs crippling local councils, renters in severe financial hardship. That this can be done without huge social damage is the politics of wishful thinking.

The reality is that there has been no meaningful efforts at peace since the 2000s and diplomacy without action to build pressure for the conflict parties to move beyond short-term domestic political pressures had pretty categorically failed.

The Israeli government needs to understand how utterly its behaviour has alienated people around the world. Given the sea change in public opinion is perhaps most pronounced in the US it would be deeply strategically unwise to simply rely on short-term support from Trump given what may come in 2028

The situation on the ground continues to deteriorate and risks continuing to at the very least until the Israeli elections this autumn without real pressure. The international community has to do what it can to stop the surge in violence and the rush to build out the E1 corridor.

As a multinational state the UK needs a reasonably flexible approach to definitions of the supranational British culture to succeed. A broad & supple core identity with space for not only ethnic diversity but regional and UK national identities can’t simply be replaced by Kemi’s policy preferences

As I know from when we were doing the first big crackdown on Candy Stores on Oxford Street in 22/23 you can only scratch the surface through trading standards and political/peer pressure on UK based landlords (overseas/opaquely owned unsurprisingly didn’t really care)

Adam Hug @adamhug.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
As Jim says if you want to make a meaningful difference to dodgy shops (e.g Candy Stores) on the high street you need to give HMRC (plus Companies House and other existing institutions) the funding they need to do the job. It’s not magic that’s required; it’s better functioning bureaucracy.

Creating a genuine system local authorities to retain more of the proceeds of local growth has been talked about for years and not really achieved. Would have real value if it can finally happen. (Also the perennial London reminder that currently the strategic authority is not constituted from LAs)

Aligning key public service boundaries is a really important step and needs to be thought about carefully. At the moment in London for example none of the key geographies align with the constellations of LAs for NHS, Police, homelessness or growth/jobs subregional partnerships all being different.
