Here's an interesting trans history in Toronto find! A Toronto Telegram article from August 1970 with trans sex worker Lily St. Clair! Previously a female impersonator, she is described as having bottom surgery 8 months prior to the article. She performed at the Westover Hotel at 212 Dundas St E.

You get an expressway, and you get an expressway, and YOU get an expressway! In 1943 the Toronto Planning Board foresaw not only the Gardiner and the 401, but also superhighways along Bloor Street, Queen, Christie/Strachan and Coxwell. ow.ly/7CW450ZOrXG

The thing is I know I have a lot to offer a prospective employer. Knowledge, skills, a gift for analyzing maps and finding stuff out. But it’s just awful putting oneself out there and hearing absolutely nothing.

One hang up I have about queer Canadian history is how the 1969 partial decriminalization is discussed. It is often discussed how 1969 didn't really decriminalize homosexuality but my issue is how the bravery of Everett George Klippert is so often erased from the story.

As a child of a survivor of these hellish places called residential school, I can tell you with everything in me that the children who survived told the truth. Everything they said and what they didn't say, happened. We lived with the shell of the humans who came back. We know what they experienced.

19th Century anti-Canada lies/propaganda as told by American slave masters: 1) You have to give half your wages to the Queen. 2) Ground is always covered in ice, nothing can be grown. 3) Geese will scratch your eyes out. (Farrell 1955)
THE HISTORY OF THE NEGRO COMMUNITY IN CHATHAM, ONTARIO

71

'After we began to hear about Canada', said M.J. Lindsay, "our master used to tell us all manner of stories about what a dreadful place it was;
and we believed some of them, we didn't. When they told us that we must pay half our wages to the Queen, every day, it didn't seem strange to us nor wrong; but when they said it was so cold there that men going mowing had to break the ice with their scythes, I didn't believe that, because it was onreasonable (sic). I knew grass wouldn't grow where ice was all the time.' 'I was old before I left Virginia', said Dan Fackart, 'I have heard it as common talk that the wild geese were so common in Canada, that they would scratch a man's eyes out; that corn wouldn't grow there, nor anything but rice; that everything they had there was imported'........82

As Dr. S.G. Howe puts it, "Nothing invited the Negroes to this
cold region, except the still, small voice of freedom."
