When colonization came to call in the US, many folks wrote about america as a pristine Eden whose forest were filled with delights and bounty. This was because indigenous folk (Like mine) built up food forest. Things that were razed and destroyed as a part of racist violence. Colonization is ongoing

Arguably the biggest democracy referendum next month: Virginia is one of only three states where the state constitution says people should lose their right to vote FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE if they are convicted of any felony. This measure would allow anyone to vote after prison.

To think that there is nothing to be learned and innovated on from the safety practices of other industries is lunacy. AI tools are power. They are not magical or exempt from safety practices that work for other complex systems. Governing AI requires disenchantment; break the spell.

David’s essay reveals clearly that this is not the priority of OpenAI. The “alignment problem” here is that the values of human wellbeing and humility are misaligned with the risk culture and social indifference of some in Silicon Valley. This is the first order problem.

Today, on appeal, the Trump administration will try once more to defend its blatantly illegal & unconstitutional campaign of retribution against Harvard. @aaup.org, AAUP-Harvard, and UAW first sued to stop it — and won in federal court. Here’s hoping the First Circuit upholds that decision.
