Delightful. The latest MacOS silently breaks dns resolution for non-registered domains, including .internal (which I use) feedbackassistant.apple.com/feedback/222... is mine and claude's bug report (I use dnsmasq and a launchagent to populate zonefiles from docker etc).

The largest federal prison in the nation is Fort Dix, which has a rated capacity of 4,600 people. The largest of these warehouse camps may hold more than twice that number of people. The federal government hasn't operated a prison camp inside the United States that large since Japanese Internment.

#Palantir supplying software to ICE. European governments should boycott and sanction Palantir, as with companies connected with human rights violations in any other country. Instead they hand Palantir control of all our most sensitive systems in security, intel, police and health care. Shame.

I've been playing around with Docker (Compose) recently. I still find it unfathomable how anyone uses YAML out of choice, especially when error messages are so unhelpful. You end up asking ChatGPT to tell you what's wrong (take your pick of spacing/indentation, : = quote-marks).

How long will it be before the US Supreme (or should that be Supine) Court allows the tangerine toddler to fire a member of the Supreme Court? That's surely gonna try and happen soon, isn't it? Why on earth regulators and courts are political is beyond me. It's easy to act for the greater good.

It's so lovely to be able to use quick voice commands again on the pixel (with a 'corp' account). For months its been broken, and no one in support has been able to help. Then a couple of days ago, boom. It's back working again. For someone who needs alarms to remind them about breaks/food…

It feels like it's about 20 years since we've wanted to serve websites on the naked/apex domains (e.g. example.org) but it seems there's still not a standard way to define ALIAS/ANAME resource records in the DNS. Anyone know of anything that might make this more standard in the near future?

If you want a weird but true fact to talk about: Dexter Holland, lead singer of The Offspring, was instrumental in this. His doctorial thesis in molecular biology was sequencing mRNA in HIV. The paper was also heavily cited in creating the COVID-19 vaccine.

in the year 2025, I did just read "build in 100 lines of Perl". My first reaction was, "how cute", then I stopped to think how many people I've worked with over the last 15 years use Perl as their default language. Maybe that's the distinction between "sysadmin" and "devops"… (python, otoh…)

1. The FCC has suspended a rule, schedule to go in effect this year, that would have banned prisons from price gouging on phone calls. Right now, at some jails, a 15-minute phone call can cost over $11. The decision benefits some of Trump's top donors.

today in "I have time"… I'm old school, and still have my dotfiles on my colo box. home gets a dynamic IP address that changes quite often. Now I've modernized my sshdconfig, updated my SSHFPs (and noticed Route53 *finally* supports SSHFP), and done a bit of a homedir tidyup (20 years of clutter)

🚨NEW: Erez Reuveni, the DOJ lawyer fired for his honesty in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, sends Congress a whistleblower letter detailing lawlessness at the DOJ around the CECOT deportations. He says Emil Bove told the DOJ to respond to likely court orders blocking flights with "fuck you."
Bove then made a remark concerning the possibility that a court order would enjoin those removals before they could be effectuated. Bove stated that DOJ would need to consider telling the courts "fuck you” and ignore any such court order. Mr. Reuveni perceived that others in the room looked stunned, and he observed awkward, nervous glances among people in the room. Silence overtook the room. Mr. Reuveni and others were quickly ushered out of the room. Notwithstanding Bove's directive, Mr. Reuveni left the meeting understanding that DOJ would tell DHS to follow all court orders.21 - Mr. Reuveni was stunned by Bove's statement because, to Mr. Reuveni's knowledge, no one in DOJ leadership - in any Administration – had ever suggested the Department ofJustice could blatantly ignore court orders, especially with a "fuck you.” Mr. Reuveni was in disbelief, because, on the contrary, the Department of Justice consistently advises its clients of their obligation to follow court orders, not to ignore them. Mr. Reuveni knew that it was absurd and unlawful to do otherwise, a proposition that Mr. Reuveni felt even more certain of after a brief conversation with his supervisor, August Flentje, shortly after the meeting.
