I hate ticks. They have been featured in several recent articles & interviews. Their spread, the diseases ticks carry & their complications (incl alpha-gal syndrome) are getting worse. I link the most recent below. If you have experience w particular repellents, -cides (e.g., permethrin), pls share
A US Map showing the distribution of tick-borne diseases in the US over 2019-2022. Over 184,000 cases were reported to the CDC: about 76% were Lyme Disease. Other diseases shown were Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Spotted fevers.

And as it's #FossilFriday, here's the large Ichthyosaurus tenuirostris which Lyell saw at Mary Anning's shop on 3 July 1823, drawn on that day by French geologist Constant Prévost whom Lyell was accompanying on a tour of southwest England.
Drawing of an almost complete ichthyosaur skeleton, although many of the limb bones are missing.

It's not perfectly accurate, but GENERALLY, the more iron, the yellower (limonite) or redder (hematite) the pigment & the more manganese, the browner or darker the pigment. 'Yellow ochre', for example, has little or no manganese. Umber has high amounts (5-20%), with sienna in between (0-5%).
A venn diagram of sorts with three yellow to brown circles labeled Ochre, Sienna, and Umber, with text explaining the amount of clay, iron oxide hydroxide, and manganese oxide.

Because people asked, I want to point folks to some archiving resources that were circulated at the start of the admin's takedown of federal data at CDC, AskJAN, NIH, and discuss why keeping our data is so important. A thread 🧵
From DIY Web Archiving Zine:

Things disappear from the Internet*
*sometimes, are deliberately disappeared

Care about stuff on the web?
art; zines; fan fic; videos / tiktoks; photo galleries; social media hashtags; departed loved ones' posts; museum and archival materials; that we have always existed; what really happened; cultural memory; human rights; resistance; anger; joy

*You* need to act to archive it.

Anyone can do it-- this zine shows you how.
