Title and figures from Patterson, 1956.

The graphs show Lead 7/4 6/4 isochrons for chondritic meteorites well dated by the Rb-Sr technique. Patterson's genius lay in plotting the lead isotopic composition of deep sea sediments, understood to a time-average of Earth's lead isotopic composition on the same figure, and showing Earth must be be derived from the same reservoir as chondritic meteorites - the solar nebula. That is, that the deep sea sediment ratios lie between the 4.5 and 4.6 Ga isochrons representing condensation from the nebula.

I first learned and understood this from Press Cloud writing about it:
"Analyses of thoroughly homogenized Earth lead from oceanic sediments also fall on or close to [the line defined by the ratios of radiogenic to nonradiogenic Pb for well dated chondritic meteorites] indicating a homogeneous initial source and identical age." Preston Cloud, Oasis in Space, 1988, p. 89.

This Claire Patterson paper is among the most elegant scientific papers I know. It also has one of the best opening lines I know: "It seems we now should admit that the age of the earth is known as accurately and with about as much confidence as the concentration of aluminum is known in the Westerly, Rhode Island granite."

Patterson was 33 years when he wrote that.

I taught Historical Geology from the present to the past, and this material (Age of the Earth and Meteorites and their parent planets) comprised my last lecture this spring.

It's not perfectly accurate, but GENERALLY, the more iron, the yellower (limonite) or redder (hematite) the pigment & the more manganese, the browner or darker the pigment. 'Yellow ochre', for example, has little or no manganese. Umber has high amounts (5-20%), with sienna in between (0-5%).
A venn diagram of sorts with three yellow to brown circles labeled Ochre, Sienna, and Umber, with text explaining the amount of clay, iron oxide hydroxide, and manganese oxide.

The Orangeburg Scarp marks the Atlantic coastal plain shoreline during the Mid-Pliocene 3.3-2.9 million years ago, the last time atmospheric CO2 levels were as high as they are "now" (ca. 400 ppm). From Rovere et al, 2014, Earth-Science Reviews. Please see figure alt text.
Map of the Atlantic Coastal Plain from Georgia to Virginia showing the position of the Orangeburg Scarp, the Mid-Pliocene shoreline from field sites and the literature. Rovere et al 2014, Fig 1.

First line of Rovere et al's paper:

“The last time in Earth's history that atmospheric CO2 levels were as high as today (~ 400 ppm, Pagani et al., 2009) was the mid-Pliocene (~3.3 to 2.9 Ma), a period that preceded the onset of extensive northern hemisphere glaciation and that was characterized by global mean temperatures as much as 3 °C warmer than the present (Raymo et al., 1996; Dowsett et al., 2009).”
