Because NSF has eliminated its directorate for the social, behavioral and economic sciences, it’s unlikely there will be any training funding for economists, psychologists, political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, etc.

New NSF BIO solicitation says expected number of awards is 250-300. Historically, the number of awards is closer to 800-1000 for the Directorate of Bio Sciences: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses... Unless I'm missing large, non-core programs, this seems really not good?

Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

New: The National Science Foundation is preparing to claw back some $500 million in funds from some of its core science programs in physics, math, computer science, and engineering in order to fund a project from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

More details on the firing of the National Science Board. The NSF now has no director, deputy director, or board. They have issued almost no new awards in 2026. The plan appears to be to completely destroyed the agency. The details are horrifying and have Russ Vought written all over them.

This is the Trump/RFK Jr/Jay Bhattacharya way—this trio of dudes loves censorship & loathes academic freedom. At my university, for example, RFK Jr wrote us a letter banning DEI in medical education (www.hhs.gov/sites/defaul...) & Bhattacharya banned us from using the words “racial disparities.” Ugh
