I teach in a different FL district and Slaughterhouse-Five was banned for us last year. I still keep a copy or two on my desk and am happy to talk about it, though I don’t let students borrow my copies. Fun fact that interested students might sometimes discover: the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library send free copies of the book to students who request it. Two illustrated awareness ribbons are displayed side-by-side on a white background. On the left is the “SOC Ribbon,” a black ribbon themed around a cybersecurity security operations center. The ribbon contains green-on-black terminal windows showing humorous command-line messages, a glowing world map, coffee stains, paw prints, and a sleeping gray tabby cat draped across a keyboard. Handwritten cybersecurity jokes and references appear throughout, including “Sleep Detect Investigate Repeat,” “Coffee Fuels Threat Hunting,” and an alert checklist ending with “Repeat.” The overall visual style resembles a late-night monitoring shift powered by caffeine and persistence.

On the right is the “Chaos Ribbon,” a bright teal ribbon covered with cartoon raccoons and cybersecurity-themed objects. Scattered across the ribbon are pizza slices, yellow padlocks, USB devices, a laptop, lockpicks, a coffee mug labeled “Chaos Fuels Progress,” a trash can labeled “It Depends,” and a yellow rubber duck. Text includes “Trust but Verify,” “Curiosity Sometimes Breaks Things,” and “Duck Security Matters.” The ribbon combines cybersecurity culture, hacker humor, and playful chaos into a colorful, crowded design. The two ribbons contrast order and vigilance with curiosity and delightful mayhem.

fs.blog/kurt-vonnegu... "And we all know, too, that those words really don’t damage children much. They didn’t damage us when we were young. It was evil deeds and lying that hurt us."
Excerpt from Kurt Vonnegut's letter to the head of the Drake School Board in 1973: "If you were to bother to read my books, to behave as educated persons would, you would learn that they are not sexy, and do not argue in favor of wildness of any kind. They beg that people be kinder and more responsible than they often are. It is true that some of the characters speak coarsely. That is because people speak coarsely in real life. Especially soldiers and hardworking men speak coarsely, and even our most sheltered children know that. And we all know, too, that those words really don’t damage children much. They didn’t damage us when we were young. It was evil deeds and lying that hurt us."
