EU proposes end to ‘five tabs, three apps and a prayer’ for cross-border train bookings
New rules would enable single-ticket bookings across multiple rail operators throughout Europe Cross-border train journeys through several European countries are the stuff of many a holidaymaker’s dreams. But the reality of trying to buy the tickets, navigating multiple websites without knowing who can help if a connection is missed, can prove less than relaxing. As one MEP puts it, it can often require “five tabs, three apps and a prayer”. Continue reading...

If rights depend on how and where you buy tickets: ☛ Not all journeys will be available with rights. ☛ Those that can will come with extra hassle and a price premium. ☛ Passengers will lose flexibility and options. We have a better, simpler, more practical idea: erpu.eu/en/guarantee...

We are working on a detailed summary of what the EU's proposal contains and what that means for passengers. But, here is the short version: The commission has good intentions but their plan falls woefully short. Making rights contingent on how and where you bought your tickets is not good enough.
Does the EU's plan deliver for passengers?

We need guaranteed rights, no matter how many operators or how you bought your tickets. The plan does not deliver that.

We need easier ticketing, that allows you to find and purchase tickets for the best price. The plan does mostly deliver that.

Guaranteeing rights + making it easier to purchase tickets are key if we want to make choosing rail viable for cross-border journeys. These reforms, if done correctly, would deliver better service for citizens, advance green ambitions, and support economic growth and EU businesses.

The easiest, most direct way, to guarantee rights is for: (1) Full rights to apply to any journey as long as all transfers respect minimum connection times, regardless of the number or nature of the tickets and transactions. (2) Minimum connection times be set neutrally & be made publicly available.

📊 Data update: How many people live in poverty around the world, and how has that changed over the last decades? The World Bank's Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP) is one of the primary tools we have for answering these questions.
Stacked area chart of total population living in extreme poverty (below $3 per day) by world region from 1990 to 2026, where global numbers fall from about 2.3 billion in 1990 to under 1 billion in 2026, driven mainly by large declines in East Asia & Pacific and South Asia. Sub-Saharan Africa's count remains high and becomes a larger share of global poverty over time. Data source: Lakner et al. (2025), updated using World Bank PIP in March 2026. License: CC BY.
