I don't recall increasing costs for travellers and making airports even more unpleasant places to spend time in as something Carney campaigned on during the last election

Data centres should pay ten times the consumer rate for energy. They should subsidise us, and not the other way around.

If I were emperor for a day, one change I'd make: In every political race, at every level, at least the *first* debate would be replaced by a simple test of knowledge. How do taxes work? What agency is responsible for what? Is your area growing or shrinking in population? Just basic stuff.

SCOOP: 404 Media placed a tracking device in a shipment of rare books to see which AI company was buying it. What did we find? It ended up at an Amazon facility where Amazon scans and destroys books. Yes. This is literally the logo outside the Amazon warehouse door. Read now:

My @thestar.com column: Olivia Chow is making big moves to put a team together for a potential second term. But who’s on Team Bradford? The mayor’s main opponent has had trouble finding allies at city hall—where it’s hard to get things done without a strong team. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Matt Elliott: Why Olivia Chow is building a council team for her second term — and why Brad Bradford is rolling solo
Olivia Chow is building a council team with Mike Layton and Nate Erskine-Smith. Can opponent Brad Bradford win the Toronto mayor’s race solo?

Woke up, made coffee, and sat at my laptop where companies gathered and shared information about my news consumption, entertainment preferences, shopping habits, and more. When I left the house, my departure time was recorded by my smart lock and my doorbell camera captured what I was wearing. 🧵

Wealthy bro dudes like Shopify CEO benefit way more from public infrastructure than we do. Their delivery trucks, trains, and planes use our public roads, waterways/ports, and airports. To make them bank. But we should get no vote compared to them? Nah bro, you should get no vote for freeloading.

Irritating to see the Toronto island airport battle framed as NIMBYism. This was a project with zero business case that would have destroyed economic value and soft power – and stopped homebuilding! It was a terrible project that deserved to die. When people say no, sometimes they are correct.

Data centers should be required to have solar power cells covering every surface of the roof of the building, and powerful batteries to store any excess energy for a rainy day.

It feels ridiculous to be told my entire life the importance of reducing my energy usage and switching to stuff like LED bulbs and then read reports of energy prices spiking in many US communities due to data centers.

People don't long for "inconvenience." They long for permanence. And though streaming services may be convenient, people are waking up to the fact that we are paying rent-seeking middle men month after month for things we will never actually own.

Reword of XKCD cartoon that showed the complex Internet structure all relying on some task that someone's been thanklessly maintaining since 2007. This has been reworked to talk about Fossil Fuel Infrastructure, and a strait that some random government has been thanklessly maintaining since the 15th century. I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.
