On this day in 2015, the universe’s gravitational waves, predicted by Albert Einstein a century before, were observed for the first time by LIGO. The observation led to a new way to study our universe and the 2017 #NobelPrize in Physics for Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish and Kip Thorne.

When I posted this, I thought it was funny, but... They initially designed it with a human-like arm swing, but swinging the arms too much caused overheating, couldn't complete the 400m race. Given this constraint, they let the robot gradually learn a new running style on its own.

Gouldian finch Black-faced is by far the most common, making up about 70% to 80% of the wild population. Red-faced variant is next at roughly 20% to 30%, while the orange/yellow-faced variant is extremely rare in nature.

What we are seeing is an attempt to turn away from the idea of basic research entirely, that all that's left is engineering and implementation. But we still need moonshots and risk taking and industry is not always set up well for that

Senkyaku Banrai, an artificial Edo town-style attraction near Tokyo’s Toyosu Fish Market, opened in February 2024. The building sports an onsen, but there’s no natural source of hot spring water here: they truck it in daily from Hakone and Yugawara.

It took a while but the effects of unstable government funding on research are showing up. Smaller PhD cohorts. Faculty spending more time in industry or scaling down their plans. Faculty leaving to other countries. Another unforced disaster.

Could you boil water without heat 💧 Boiling isn’t just about temperature, it’s about pressure. Lower the pressure, like at high altitudes or inside a vacuum chamber where air pressure is reduced, and water molecules can escape into gas much more easily, even at room temperature. So in the end… yes!

For anything other than an audience of pure specialists, I've started doing talks that are 80%+ introduction, 20% results/discussion. Losing absolutely nobody by being too technical is nice! People who want more information can chat to you afterwards - that won't happen if you lose them on slide 2.
