Paul Robeson and his wife, Eslanda, were invited as special guests to the Royal National #Eisteddfod of Wales held at Ebbw Vale in August 1958. At the Cymanfa Ganu on the 03 August, Paul Robeson was introduced to a large audience of over 9,000 people by local MP Aneurin Bevan, [...]

The hospitality industry are back lobbying for a VAT cut They don't mention the cost: £12bn They don't mention who gets the £: ❌ The smallest most vulnerable businesses? Get nothing ❌ Consumers? Prices won't fall ✅ McDonald's gets £400m. Big chains are big winners 🧵:

As @nadinebh.bsky.social this is just pathetic, self-serving BS. The Treasury doesn't keep some secret set of books the public can't see! Especially since the OBR, the UK has a remarkably transparent approach to the public finances. The dogs in the street knew what the fiscal position was...

Healey discovered he would become chancellor just days before he entered the Treasury, giving him no time for the customary meetings with officials to see the state of the government’s books ahead of taking power.

“I don’t think John Healey knew; I don’t think Andy knew,” says a senior Labour official. “Until you get the proper briefings you can only know so much. John was not in access talks with the Treasury until it was way too late.”

This explainer out of Australia is genuinely useful background and analysis of what happened with the Canada-US trade deal last night. Note that it is extremely and delightfully sweary. Also there’s an appended glossary of Australian slang. ifloz.substack.com/p/king-carne...

The state of this. A lovely day out for Badenoch and Philp, playing dress up and making pronouncements about early release schemes - having left the country with one hundred available men's prison places, after fourteen years in charge. You read that right. One hundred places.
Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch and Shadow Home Office Secretary Chris Philp, in high-vis police jackets enjoy a photo opportunity.

Why on earth not just put the Emergency briefing film on bbc i player now? All this messing about trying to use it as a campaign tool (petitions to get the Govt to show it on all 4 channels, like some PSB from the 40s) is just game playing. If you want to reach 'ordinary' people, go where they are.

Took me 30 years to look properly at my Mum's birth certificate and realise she'd been born in the local workhouse! (None of us kids ever knew) Also, a shout out for the brilliant @GwentArchives and their lovely staff...👏👏

Fabulous thread on workhouses as early providers of healthcare. Fascinated by how they were used by some women as maternity hospitals. But the birth certificate would always show the full address (not 'the workhouse') to avoid stigma.

So what was the answer? Burnham seems to have waded into the subject via early release (God knows why - his hero/saviour complex?) and now we have a totally inexperienced Minister having to deal with the fallout of that. We'd made a good start in fixing the nightmare Tory prison legacy. A shame.

Burnham is known for telling whatever truth suits him at the time. Why shouldn't Darren Jones call that out from Day one? I don't care what colour the Govt is - I want them to be honest, and not just make stuff up because it's 'good comms'.

So it's ok for Burnham (and other ego driven chancers) can scheme, plot and connive to oust a Labour leader and Prime Minister. But then everyone else has to suck it up, and pretend he's the best thing since sliced bread? Well fuck that. Because fair's fair. Even if he plays dirty.

Wish he'd stayed at H&SC. I saw him answering questions in the Commons a few weeks ago and he was really good - completely on top of his brief and understood instinctively how to combat the nonsense from the opposition. Will he be replaced by a Burnham 'debt' rather than someone with some skills..

So, it's Stephen Kinnock. I thought he was doing a good job at health. Not sure I see the point in the Wales shift, apart from being in the Cabinet, and Andy keeping Kinnock senior on side.

I just can't. So much hard work, and pain, over the years, and then, finally, the win in 24, and now this. Throwing it away for his ego. I'm absolutely broken hearted. And he is already so much worse than I thought he'd be. We could have made real change. Now, we just get his PR fluff, at best.

Yeah, but I've seen some more of the BS that Burnham's been putting out about his own childhood. 'My Mum was crying and that's what made me go into politics'. He's so full of crap, and the press seem to believe it all...*sigh*

He likes to keep on side with everyone, and that's easy when you're just a Mayor. (They all do it) And most charities were desperate to get rid of the Tories and thought they'd have more of a seat round the table. If you think he's going to do anything meaningful, I think you're in for a shock.

Oh come on Nicole...I know all the charities need to keep in with Govt, but it's an obvious PR stunt. You do them all the time, so does he. Admittedly more dramatic than the lectern, but for the same purpose.
