The hospitality industry are back lobbying for a VAT cut They don't mention the cost: £12bn They don't mention who gets the £: ❌ The smallest most vulnerable businesses? Get nothing ❌ Consumers? Prices won't fall ✅ McDonald's gets £400m. Big chains are big winners 🧵:

As @nadinebh.bsky.social this is just pathetic, self-serving BS. The Treasury doesn't keep some secret set of books the public can't see! Especially since the OBR, the UK has a remarkably transparent approach to the public finances. The dogs in the street knew what the fiscal position was...

Healey discovered he would become chancellor just days before he entered the Treasury, giving him no time for the customary meetings with officials to see the state of the government’s books ahead of taking power.

“I don’t think John Healey knew; I don’t think Andy knew,” says a senior Labour official. “Until you get the proper briefings you can only know so much. John was not in access talks with the Treasury until it was way too late.”

The state of this. A lovely day out for Badenoch and Philp, playing dress up and making pronouncements about early release schemes - having left the country with one hundred available men's prison places, after fourteen years in charge. You read that right. One hundred places.
Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch and Shadow Home Office Secretary Chris Philp, in high-vis police jackets enjoy a photo opportunity.

Why on earth not just put the Emergency briefing film on bbc i player now? All this messing about trying to use it as a campaign tool (petitions to get the Govt to show it on all 4 channels, like some PSB from the 40s) is just game playing. If you want to reach 'ordinary' people, go where they are.

Fabulous thread on workhouses as early providers of healthcare. Fascinated by how they were used by some women as maternity hospitals. But the birth certificate would always show the full address (not 'the workhouse') to avoid stigma.

So what was the answer? Burnham seems to have waded into the subject via early release (God knows why - his hero/saviour complex?) and now we have a totally inexperienced Minister having to deal with the fallout of that. We'd made a good start in fixing the nightmare Tory prison legacy. A shame.

Burnham is known for telling whatever truth suits him at the time. Why shouldn't Darren Jones call that out from Day one? I don't care what colour the Govt is - I want them to be honest, and not just make stuff up because it's 'good comms'.

So it's ok for Burnham (and other ego driven chancers) can scheme, plot and connive to oust a Labour leader and Prime Minister. But then everyone else has to suck it up, and pretend he's the best thing since sliced bread? Well fuck that. Because fair's fair. Even if he plays dirty.

Wish he'd stayed at H&SC. I saw him answering questions in the Commons a few weeks ago and he was really good - completely on top of his brief and understood instinctively how to combat the nonsense from the opposition. Will he be replaced by a Burnham 'debt' rather than someone with some skills..

Wow. So - depending on how many lose their deposits - the council will receive a maximum of 34x£300 (£10,200). But each of the 34 candidates is entitled to claim costs for sending one letter to every elector. So costs = 34x £68.250) = £2,320,500. £2.3 MILLION. That's not democracy - that's bonkers

The Tories are out Reforming Reform, here in #Bradford Council - It was a Tory Cllr that put forward a typically sad, nasty, little motion about banning flags. Hand in glove with Reform Cllrs all the way....dressing up patriotism as racism.

District Councils in Wales were so furious at being forced into unitary authorities that they were determined to spend everything in their coffers. I was working for Women's Aid at the time - have to say lots of local groups benefited from that! (And the 2 tier system was nonsense, with hindsight)

308,770 people started an apprenticeship in 2025/26. That's 8.7% more than last year. Apprenticeship starts collapsed on the Tories’ watch and young people took the biggest hit. They've never dropped once under this Labour government.

Absolutely brilliant thread from Dan Neidle. I have to say I find the idea of Burnham really understanding the consequences of this hard to imagine. And I just don't see the 'brilliant politician' Burnham being willing to incur deep unpopularity, just to do the right economic thing!

Delighted for him. But such a shame the Labour Party's only 'coalition of the willing' turned out to be a bunch of less than impressive MPs & Councillors, desperate for a poll boost and incapable of appreciating anything other than glib PR messaging, and believing that's going to be enough. 🤯

'Accelerate the reset'....WTF? Starmer has been negotiating from Day 1 on a reset....using his skills and earning EU respect.(Not just pretending it's all terribly simple and rejoining is just a click of the fingers). Burnham, at best, will continue the job. At worst, he'll screw it all up.
