Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 21hIt is partly my age, and not retaining as easily, but duolingo hasn’t been much help. 110
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 21hI have been recommended www.bbc.co.uk/languages/sp... but haven’t had time to look. Probably they do Welsh. Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 21hWhat makes me really cross is that they say it makes the quiet, nervous child feel safe! What would make them feel safe is a relaxed atmosphere where you can chat in a corridor, don’t have to follow instructions on a count of 3, are worried about needing to go to the toilet etc 120
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 21hThe sad thing is for those who live in rural places like Cornwall and don’t have alternatives. 100
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 21hThank you. I am sure babbel is probably quite good but they want a lot of money upfront. They have now offered me 60% off but that is for a year. There is no option to pay for a month - 3 months is the shortest. 000
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 23hI didn’t get anywhere asking if babbel was any good for learning a language. Does anyone have a recommendation? I got fed up with Duolingo. 834
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 23hI suppose it is selection - parents like me simply wouldn’t choose it. At least they know exactly what they are going to get - no surprises once there. 100
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 23hTeachers used to be free to treat the children as individuals and find the method to suit the child. What worries me is that young teachers are not expected to think. When I was a young teacher we had choice. 021
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 23hMy observations, after 50 yrs, are that whatever new ideas come in the ones to suffer are the ones who find it difficult to- the very ones it is supposed to help. Teachers warned at the start that phonics was a useful tool but not the only tool. 110
Reposted by Jenny MJaney M @dancingonjelly.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Not to mention that when something is government backed, that is where ALL the research goes to the detriment of other ideas. Almost all Secondary reading interventions are phonics related, by which point a kid might have had 10 years of it and it hasn't worked for them. 051

Reposted by Jenny MSue Cowley @suecowley.bsky.social · 08/10/2026It's the rigid policies that trap teachers into not making adjustments. When you insist 'everyone must do x' you're immediately making it harder for everyone to be included. We can have consistent expectations alongside flexible ways of getting to them. 1172
Reposted by Jenny MSue Cowley @suecowley.bsky.social · 08/10/2026This. We need to stop seeing diagnosis as a prerequisite for being flexible and making adjustments. Everyone benefits from the (usually small) changes required. I was talking about this yesterday, for instance how you can sense as a teacher who might struggle with eye contact. 2349
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 23hThe last thing nervous children want for the first fortnight is a Boot Camp, they have done nothing to deserve. Why be in fear of forgetting a pen? Back when my sons went the first week was a relaxed ‘getting to know you’ time. I think people forget what a huge thing transition is to an 11 year old. 030
Jenny M @abbyaug.bsky.social · 23hI am glad it is being recognised. When my sons did the transition it was all about the excitement of new opportunities and time was taken in year 6 with visits. For sometime now it seems to have been used to lay down the rules and scare them. Michaela School even calls it ‘Boot Camp’! 330

Reposted by Jenny MSue Cowley @suecowley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Just to add, the reason we're able to say to our team not to worry about Ofsted is because we are made up of the families who join us. If staff are happy, children are happy and parents and carers are happy too. Ofsted who? 🤷♀️ A lot harder for schools with all the external data pressures though. 😕 161
Reposted by Jenny MSue Cowley @suecowley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Also can we PLEASE stop with this idea that Ofsted helps parents to 'choose' a school. That is such a giveaway for people live in places with decent public transport. Most parents can only 'express a preference' and then their kids get to go to their local school, unless the parents can drive daily. 3295
Reposted by Jenny MSue Cowley @suecowley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The only way we're ever going to 'solve' Ofsted is to stop it being a competition. Have two categories: all fine/needs support. If you buy into the idea that the competition is what makes people work harder you'll never get away from the problem. This includes posts about 'doing well' in Ofsteds. 58214
