I know all three of the references, but where is the joke? It is the morning still, where I am... so I might just be undercaffinated?

That court the Atlanta WNBA team uses does not add to the viewing experience. That’s the nicest way I can put it.

Yes, well, racing is my #1 sport, even above soccer, so I have F1 thoughts (mostly negative): - Too many races (diluting importance of each one) - Cars are too big, too hard to drive - The cars sound like farts - The Apple TV deal is dumb and self-destructive L/T - "F1-only" fans are obnoxious

And, like that’s, okay. I’m a ~top 1 percent sports fan, probably, and even I’m a bit “sportsball” about a couple of sports like golf and field hockey.

I've said it repeatedly, but MLS has reached a point where switching the season isn't enough. It needs a full relaunch (probably including a rebrand) to such an extent that it represents a repudiation of how the league has operated--with more spending changes than anyone is prepared to do.

Aaron Stollar @aaronstol.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The Seattle Times and Miami Herald are simply adding themselves to a long and distinguished list of media (NBC and ESPN right at the top of it) who gave MLS every chance and decided the investment in coverage simply wasn't worth it.

Wholeheartedly agree w/those (such as Franco Panizo on the other site) who are prepared to assign <some> of the blame on local media giving up on MLS coverage to the league itself. Economic conditions in media are what they are, but the league is simply not putting out a compelling enough product.

Yes, well, on the men's side, I can think one really big black-and-red reason why the DMV isn't contributing more to the national team. United is festering hole of an organization... compared to the Spirit, compared to the Union, and basically just as useless as NYRB. A total waste of space.

If I thought this league was capable of long-term, strategic thinking, I'd say Indy looks like a very good city for a 2nd-tier team in a hypothetical MLS1/MLS2 setup, but, well, we all know this is just another expansion fee grab by owners with no vision or strategy.
011
Aaron Stollar @aaronstol.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
As MLS expansion markets go, Indy is better than Sacramento, at least. More importantly, it's awfully close to both Columbus (174 mi) and Cincinnati (109 mi). It has fewer Fortune 500 companies than both Ohio cities too. x.com/MLS_PR/statu...

Yep. Ross Paule saved Columbus from embarrassment with a stoppage time penalty winner. Hilario Grajeda was the ref, which for those of us old enough to remember, should be enough to send chills down the spine. 5,200 fans. "Open Cup Fever, catch it!"

Syracuse played on old-school astroturf when I encountered them in college. Laurie Calloway, the first ever San Jose Clash manager, coached them in an Open Cup match against Columbus I attended where my prevailing memory is of Syracuse spending 90 mins trying to kick chunks out of Columbus.

@fredsmith.bsky.social welp, my 10-year-old made it about 10 laps squeezed up against a fence in turn 2. I don’t blame him. Not an easy spectator experience with no seats or screens trackside. At least it was free.

Agree on all counts. Can’t see it happening again particularly with a new mayor coming soon. Hope it just gets Indycar and other series refocused on getting a race in the mid Atlantic. So many people, so much money here.

Other thing to keep in mind, and I’m a local, is that this is almost entirely a tourist area, particularly on weekends. There are plenty of offices around, but by not racing Friday and encouraging transit use and telework during the track build, it’s not going to be that disruptive.

In light of MLS news and the NWSL's propensity to mimic their American soccer brothers, I once again implore: Keep the balanced regular season format and keep the playoffs at eight teams. Do not reinvent the wheel here.

Every league is guilty of this, but it just seems MLS is worse about placating the desires of its worst, least ambitious owners. Who wants this format other than those owners?
100
Aaron Stollar @aaronstol.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
I don't think you can sell a "new higher-quality MLS" line when 20 of 30 teams make the playoffs. MLS will try and call the first part of this system something other than "playoffs" but it's just MLS doing what it always does and placating unambitious owners who just want playoff gate revenues.
