In the latest episode of Just Justice, I speak with Mujahideen Muhammad, MPS, co-founder of The Pillars of Promise, about his journey from 25 years in prison to researcher at Columbia University and advocate for justice reform. We discuss reentry, the Second Look Act, and book clubs, of course.

A prosecutor can knowingly hide evidence, convict an innocent person, and never be sued for it. Iris Eytan wants to end that — and founded Protect Ethical Prosecutors to do it. My conversation with her is out now. Link in comments below. #CriminalJusticeReform #WrongfulConvictions

I'm so glad Jesse Askew was finally released after his unjust sentence, that Burke lived to see it, that the GA district attorney did the right thing. Congrats to the Southern Center for Human Rights and Joshua Sharpe for his change-making coverage! Next up, a second chance law in Georgia.

April is Second Chance Month, a time to think abt how we respond to harm, accountability, and the possibility of change. Some of the most powerful perspectives abt this come from people who have lived it. I’ve been especially shaped by books that center the voices of formerly incarcerated people.

I served on NJ's Clemency Advisory Board. It was deliberate, careful, serious work. The opposite of what's happening federally. Every reckless pardon makes the next good governor more afraid to grant clemency to someone who deserves it. That's the real crime spree.

Those of you of a certain age will remember when MIchael Dukakis got "Willie Hortoned" by George Bush, causing thousands of people to be denied parole and making politicians reluctant to grant pardons to people who deserve them for fear that even one might commit a new offense after clemency. 🧵

April is Second Chance month. But not in FL, TX, and OK, the 3 states responsible for the 7 executions that already have happened in 2026. Yet even as executions seem to be on the rise, public support for the death penalty is at an all time low. It's time to #endthedeathpenalty.

Prosecutes should not be in the business of hiding things from the public. Especially when it has to do with official misconduct. Police and prosecutorial misconduct, including hiding evidence, are often at the root of wrongful convictions.

As @kylecbarry.bsky.social expertly explains: "the Pennsylvania Supreme Court today held that mandatory life without parole sentences for felony murder violate the state constitution." The rulings gives hundreds of people in PA prisons a sceond chance, who otherwise would die in prison.

Life without parole means that ppl experience in prison all of the challenges that aging brings, including reduced mobility, diabetis, heart disease, and dementia. Elder parole recognizes that prisons are ill-equipped to address these issues & that public safety doesn't require life incarceration.

I'm a public defender turned professor turned author. For 30 years I've studied, taught, and fought the American criminal legal system. Here's what I know: it convicts innocent people, it punishes people far beyond what justice requires, and it rarely gives second chances to those who deserve them.

If you know me, you know I am against the death penalty in all cases, not just when innocence is involved. I believe the state should never have the power to take a human life as punishment. But the case of Charles "Sonny" Burton deserves the attention of even those who don't share that view.
