It's #BannedBooksWeek! A handful of people shouldn't be allowed to dictate what the rest of us can read! Organized groups have used fear and disinformation to silence stories & remove books from libraries, schools, & bookstores. Why can’t they just let books be? bannedbooksweek.org/let-freedom-...

Hello Bonjour! I am Aalap, in Edmonton (Canada). My two colleagues are Luna Lovegood (cat, named before the whole TERF thing, btw!) and Forest (my hound).

I sometimes read and absorb things, which is great. Other times, I edit without reading 😂 it’s tricky for sure. Very different editing to fiction or non-fiction book ms.

I wish people outside of Canada would stop trying to tell us we are actually "American." We never ever ever call ourselves American. Please respect how we refer to ourselves.

The man who proclaimed to the world that “white solidarity is the only way to survive” is incapable of grasping his own pathetic supremacism because, he insists, he got a half-Indian person pregnant. I’m sick of hearing how “smart” this dull, self-adoring, half-wit bigot is.

Pierre Berton said that a Canadian is someone who knows how to have sex in a canoe. I can't confirm this, but I can confirm that a Canadian is someone who knows that American beer is like sex in a canoe: fucking close to water.

Will Farage, Musk etc be condemning white people in general for the actions of this violent white person, and advocating rage or violence in response? Will the BBC be laundering their 'legitimate concerns' about those white folks?

Sometimes writing English the way it's spoken is okay. Those who think they have authority over the language will take offence, but that doesn't make your English wrong.

Aalap Trivedi — Editor @aalaptrivedi.bsky.social · 10/06/2026

I grew up watching cricket, which meant listening to a lot of different Englishes. When I wrote some of that English in school, I was mocked and reprimanded by my English teacher. Why? Cuz I didn't follow all the rules she was teaching us. This is a good reminder why it's okay to break "rules".

Excellent point! It's also why we propose changes in skilled trades terminology. To help students relate to it. Journeyman? No, journeyperson. Manpower? No, labour. Brotherhood? Please, no! Union/association/alliance.

A4: In my day job as a technical editor for the skilled trades, we change "tradesman" to "tradesperson" and other technical terminology, to reflect learners preferences. As the trades start attracting a diverse population, its language must change too!
