Study: confirmed skeletal muscle abnormalities in Long COVID and ME Study: found evidence that fibromyalgia is a central nervous system disorder Study: Black people in the U.S. are less likely to be diagnosed with Long COVID compared to white people thesicktimes.org/2026/08/04/r...
ID: Muscle fibers appear underneath a microscope in a striped pattern. The fibers appear red with white spaces. Inside the fiber are purple dots. The text reads, “The Sick Times. Long COVID research updates. A new study confirmed skeletal muscle abnormalities in Long COVID and ME. A large genetic study found evidence that fibromyalgia is a central nervous system disorder. Black people in the U.S. are less likely to be diagnosed with Long COVID compared to white people, according to a new study.” A new study in Nature Communications confirmed skeletal muscle abnormalities in Long COVID and ME. The study, which furthered past research on post-exertional malaise from the same research group, compared various exercise tests and biopsies of people with Long COVID and ME to results from people who underwent 60 days of strict bedrest, as well as results from controls. “There are indications of abnormalities in muscle fibers, energy production, and oxygen supply,” lead researcher Rob Wüst said in a press release. People with Long COVID and ME “should not be treated as if they have merely lost their fitness. Future studies and diagnostics must take this into account.”
A large genetic study in Nature Medicine found evidence that fibromyalgia is a central nervous system disorder. Researchers analyzed genetic data from 2.56 million people, comparing around 54,000 people with fibromyalgia to controls. They found 26 loci for the disease, or specific locations on a chromosome where variations on DNA are linked to the increased chance of disease development. Though fibromyalgia has a higher prevalence in women, the researchers did not find a sex difference in the genetic architecture. “These findings establish a firm biological basis for a long-debated condition,” the researchers concluded. The study’s biggest limiting factor was its primarily European cohort, which could limit how well the findings apply to people of other ethnicities.
Black people in the U.S. are less likely to be diagnosed with Long COVID compared to white people, according to a new study in Health Affairs. Researchers evaluated the electronic health records of 2.4 million Americans diagnosed with acute COVID-19 between 2022 and early 2023, using the ICD-10-CM code for Long COVID (U09.9) as the primary outcome. The researchers found less than 1% of each ethnicity group in the study had a Long COVID diagnosis, and stated that their findings were “likely an underestimate of the true magnitude of diagnostic bias.”

AAHD is proud to celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 36th Anniversary. On July 26th we uplift this important civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools and transportation.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) passed in 1990. This landmark civil rights law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of public life. Along with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADA established a right to community living over
institutionalization. Photo of a woman in a power wheelchair hanging out in the kitchen with her roommates as one chops vegetables. He has Moebius Syndrome and a face that is paralyzed.Recent directives from the DOJ are rolling back federal support for the 1999 Olmstead Supreme Court decision
which reinforced this right. In the Olmstead v. L.C. decision, the Supreme Court affirmed that institutionalization is a form of discrimination against disabled people prohibited by the ADA. This ruling established a mandate for states to provide supports in a community setting. Olmstead established an end to the era of segregation for disabled people. The decision still stands. We call on state leadership to commit to Olmstead & build a nation where community living is universal. Photo of	colleagues chatting and working in a modern coworking office space. At one table, a young white woman with partially paralyzed arms and hands chats with a young pale white blind woman. A black and white guide dog with a guide harness lies on the floor next to the blind womanAsk your state governor and attorney general to reject the DOJ memo and commit to community integration of people with disabilities. Analysis from @statnews.com shows an overwhelming opposition to the OMB's proposed changes to federal grantmaking. We know these changes would harm many communities, including critical disability research being done to support community health. We call on OMB to halt implementation of this rule.

Today we're on Capitol Hill with the Alliance for NIDILRR Grantees & the Disability & Rehabilitation Research Coalition (DRRC) to advocate for additional funding for the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research. NIDILRR is a keystone for disability research!
National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). We call on Congress to increase the NIDILRR budget to $150 Million in 2027. With an increase in funding, NIDILRR will be able to provide overdue cost-of-living increases to support disability researchers doing this important work.In FY 2023*, NIDILRR funded: 271 grants supporting 1,500+ research projects. This was done with $112.5 million in funding to support essential disability community health needs (based on the most recently available data). NIDILRR continues to have a tremendous impact. These distinguished studies were made possible by NIDILRR. Outcomes of Person-Centered Planning in Medicaid Home- and Community-Based Services. Published in the Gerontologist. Authors: Chong et al. This study found Person-Centered Planning* was being used by the majority of HCBS recipients in 12 states studied. Participation in decision-making improves the community living experience. *Where people with disabilities help plan their own HCBS services and supports.Study Highlights. Long COVID Among People With Preexisting Disabilities. Published in AJPH. Authors: Hall et al. Takeaway: Long COVID occurred more frequently in people with pre-existing disabilities than among the nondisabled population. This work illuminates the longstanding barriers to health care and higher risk of exposure to COVID-19 affecting the disability community. Second study: An Accommodation for Whom? Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Changed the Landscape of Flexible and Remote Work for Workers with Disabilities? Published in Employee Responsibilities and Rights Journal. Author: Brooks. Takeaway: A select group of disabled workers were the main group to benefit from COVID-19 related remote work. Overall, workers with disabilities had fewer remote work options than nondisabled workers during the pandemic. Better accommodations and employment options can support all disabled workers’ needs.
