“To be the boss is to sit alone at your desk, haunted by the suspicion that you are not in the driver's seat, but rather, you are in the back seat playing with a Fisher Price steering wheel. AI is sold as a way to wire the toy steering wheel directly into the corporation's drive-train”

So I read the @wired.com story about long covid The argument seems to be: “no one wants to believe this minority of patients over here, and that’s hypocritical. But all these other patients over there are *hysterical* & I won’t even bother talking about their experience” Did I get that right?

to wit: reading your work to see if you stole it from other writers in the aftermath of you having been shown to steal work from other writers is not bullying nor is it character assassination it is a foreseeable consequence of stealing another writer’s work
Ross barkan shares a screenshot of an NPR reporter subscribing to his substack with the text: “Right now @BobbyAllyn is subscribing to my Substack - six years' worth of essays - to presumably trawl through each piece to commit what, quite frankly, is character assassination at this point. I'm proud of my record, my work, and stand by it. I won't be bullied.”

What “distressing” ideas? How are they “cocooned”? It’s amazing how much publicity one can get by reinforcing cliches that accord so little with the experiences of so many of us who actually teach college students.
Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist and author, has been on the front lines of campus battles over free speech for more than a decade, warning that the American education system has poorly served a generation of young people by cocooning them from ideas they might find distressing.

Attention liberals: COVID anti-vaxxers are your fault for being "alienating" www.nytimes.com/2026/04/25/o...
The Editorial Board
Measles Is Back. What Comes Next Will Be Worse.
Reversing the new vaccine skepticism will require a dedicated effort.

By The Editorial BoardThe Covid pandemic once seemed as if it might reinstill confidence. The virus was a new and terrifying pathogen for which scientists developed a safe, highly effective vaccine in record time. It offered a case study in the power of vaccination. But Covid, too, soon became subject to political polarization.

Many conservatives questioned the vaccine in irrational and self-defeating ways. Liberals rightly embraced the vaccine but sometimes went so far as to be alienating — insisting that children needed annual boosters (which most countries did not), calling for the firing of unvaccinated people and more. The combination played into many Americans’ pre-existing uncertainty about how much to trust public health experts. In the years since, vaccination rates for other diseases have slipped further.
