The new form could also suggest a dualist deity like Hathor/Sekmet, either benevolent or malevolent depending on the manifestation?

I had an issue with some weird background stutter, and after spending way too much time fussing with FPS, refresh rates and vsync, I realised an ill-advised return statement made Charlotte stop for exactly one frame each time she entered a tile. So at least that's fixed! #Godot #gamedev #indiedev

Bluesky, will you do me a solid and share your favorite medieval art with me? It can be fully finished paintings or rude marginalia in an illuminated manuscript, I'm not picky, I'm just interested in getting a general survey of what modern people like.

Great keynote by @jubalbarca.bsky.social in Coding Medieval Worlds 6 😊 James took us through how he developed an interest in the field and reflected on different medievalisms using several examples including Hades. Rats were featured and the greyness with which the medieval world is often portrayed.
Screenshot from presentation that says 'The Serious bit' It says 'History in online pipelines and discourses. People have emotive attachments and political investment in the past. What can 'it's not accurate' cover for ideologically? We have to think about what we want as devs and scholars. Commitment to understanding, not just accuracy. Is all understanding equal? If not, what do we want?'

Starsector isn't on Steam, so you need to get it the old-fashioned way: Buying it on the developer's website, like God the Galactic Redemptor intended. I promise it's worth the extra effort. fractalsoftworks.com 4/4

Most of all it's Starsector's writing and worldbuilding that stand out to me. Are you bored with fighting pirates? Go on a pilgrimage to the six shrines of Ludd the Martyr, support the hubristic technological ambitions of Academy Provost Baird, or seek out the horrific secrets of the [REDACTED]! 3/4

#Starsector is a sci-fi sandbox rpg/management/tactical combat game where you command a fleet of starships, trade and/or explore, complete missions, fight tactical battles, and – should you so desire – eventually colonise planets of your own. It's very good and I highly recommend it. 2/4 #indiegames

This one's specifically for the medievalists: Our new chapter intro vignettes with marginal decorations inspired by the Bodleian Roman d'Alexander (MS. Bodl. 264). Please enjoy the little birds! (Font & text still WIP) 🎨: @boaillustration.bsky.social #MedievalMonday #marginalia #gamedev #indiedev
A chapter vignette inspired by a medieval illuminated manuscript with a decorative pattern of red and blue leaves around the edges. The pattern is further decorated with heraldic shields in the upper corners, little birds sitting in the branches along the sides, and a scene with two knights jousting in the bottom.

The vignette shows Sir Emmett, a young male courtier wearing a lovely salmon-coloured doublet and hose outfit in a Renaissance style and holding a flower.

The accompanying text reads: "Chapter 1. In which Sir Emmet meets the one true love of his life (again). Marigold suspects foul play. Charlotte converses with Princess Iris. Sir Emmett is menaced in a tavern. Appropriate names for warhorses are discussed. The Mystery Knight and
Sir Emmett joust in the Grand Tourney."

I'm starting off the new year on a high note by realising that I probably have to rebuild my entire dialogue architecture so it's possible to save and load in the middle of dialogues. 🫠 (I mean, I guess I don't *have* to, but some of these dialogues are… *very long*.) #gamedev #indiedev #godot
An in-game screenshot from The Knight & the Maiden. The scene is a large park with trees and hedges in a pixelart style. Three characters – the protagonist Charlotte, her love interest Princess Iris, and the Princess's loyal servant Marigold – are standing near a large fountain.

In a dialogue box, Princess Iris says, "Oooh, this is just like in the 'Romance of the Swan Knight'! How delightfully mysterious! Of course I agree."

I've been running an indie games studio for 15 years now, and it felt like a good time to boil down what I've learned into 4 pieces of advice: www.pentadact.com/2026-01-08-1... I hope it's of use, not least because goddamn I forgot how long blog posts take to write.
A timeline visually representing the advice from my post, emphasising how dramatically and reliably having more time, with a testable build, converts to your game being better and your studio being safer.

"Verne: The Shape of Fantasy" is an alternate-historical magical-surrealist steampunk side-scrolling narrative adventure in which you, Jules Verne, must save the world from an evil superpower and maybe also Captain Nemo. It's unique and very good and I recommend it to your attention. 2/2 #indiegames
Screenshot from "Verne: The Shape of Fantasy". Jules Verne, the game's protagonist, is in the sickbay on the Nautilus. He is sitting in a dangerous-looking chair contraption that has been outfitted with wires and mechanical gizmos. Cedric, the ship's surgeon on the Nautilus, says, "Now, go to your quarters and get some sleep. Doctor's orders!"

Casebook 1899 is a historical murder mystery adventure set in a lovingly detailed interpretation of Wilhelmine Leipzig. While the final case didn't quite work for me, the other three are compelling and well-written, combined with an interesting deduction game mechanic. Highly recommended! 2/2
A pixelart scene of the majestic neoclassical facade of the Bayerischer Bahnhof train station in Leipzig. A green steam locomotive is parked in front of the station. A human hand is hanging out of the locomotive's open firebox, which is probably not a good sign.

It’s so weird to me how the Bond people don’t seem to realise they’re basically running a superhero franchise. Bond is an archetype character, he doesn’t need a coherent dramatic arc. Just have him walk into a casino in Macau with zero explanation and start doing cool Bond stuff, it’ll be fine.

Admittedly we might see some local baby bubbles, but those are unlikely to affect the baby market as a whole, as long as the proportion of subprime babies in the financial products remains limited. Which I’m sure will never become a problem! 👍

I've written a UK parliamentary petition against payment processors using their near-monopoly power to dictate what legal content can and cannot be purchased. This is a worryingly fast-growing problem. Please sign it and share widely, UK friends! petition.parliament.uk/petitions/73...

Petition: Ban payment processors stopping services based on objections to legal content
Government should legislate that payment processing companies may not place stipulations on use of their services regarding sales of otherwise legal content and, if they do so, must face legal penalties and must remunerate platforms and individuals for lost income until service is restored.

I realise itch.io is a small company with limited resources, but in a crisis communication isn’t secondary, it’s a critical part of the crisis response! It feels like they don’t understand that, or at least they behave like they don’t, and it’s creating more unnecessary problems for them.

It’s been three weeks since !!The Incident!! and there’s still no clear explanation from itch.io about what exactly happened, what they did, when they did it, and why they did it. Get on that instead of counterproductive feuding with individual journalists!

I might regret getting involved in this, but I’m literally begging itch.io to please talk to someone who is good at community management and crisis communication, because Posting Through It in the Replies is just about the worst way to go about this.

GAME, the German game industry trade association, released this *damn* good statement on the unjust NSFW game takedowns www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
The artistic freedom of game developers is fundamental to games as a cultural medium. Any restrictions improsed by payment service providers or games platforms must not exceed the legal limits.
In Germany, thanks in part to the USK, clear, binding and established rules apply that must be adhered to. Furthermore, creative forms of expressions or certain themes in games, such as diversity, must not be targeted by individual interests or campaigns from particularly vocal groups, as is currently observed on Steam or itch.io. The terms and conditions of global payment service providers such as Visa, Mastercard, or Paypal must not conflict with European values such as freedom of expression or artistic freedom.
We therefore call on the companies involved to design their rules and offerings in a manner that ensures complicance with applicable laws and prevents overblocking.
