I’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast on and off for the past 20 years, embedded in a caring, close-knit community. This news is a huge relief for the 400 workers at Howe Sound Pulp and the local economy. Congrats to @unifor.org Local 1119 and all involved in saving these good union jobs at the mill!

The environmental and climate consequences of building a new oil pipeline are extreme, including the threat to endangered Southern Resident orcas.

The oil industry is unwilling to pay for this pipeline because even they know the world is moving away from fossil fuels. This project leaves Canadians bearing all the risks of a bad investment without any of the rewards.

Throwing billions in public money behind a pipeline at a time of climate breakdown – while sweeping aside environmental protections, meaningful Indigenous consultation and workers’ right to strike – is absolutely not in the national interest.

Over 2,000 people walked in Port Alberni today to honour Survivors, remember the children who never came home, and stand together for reconciliation. Deep gratitude to Tseshaht, Survivors, Elders and all who joined across Canada. Our hearts are with Tsawwassen First Nation. 🧡 #EveryChildMatters

Earlier today, as the community at Tsawwassen First Nation gathered to reflect and mourn, two people were killed and two others injured in a vehicle collision. On an already somber day, it is a terrible tragedy that the community has been pushed further into grief.

On this National Day for Truth & Reconciliation we reflect on our history and the colonialism and neocolonialism that continue to shape our country today. Indigenous leaders are leading the fight for human rights in our country. Truth & Reconciliation means listening to those leaders.

By taxing the richest 0.3% of Canadians, some 133,000 people, we could raise $1 billion per year to go towards fixing our broken healthcare system, building affordable housing, or creating a national public grocery network to drive down the cost of groceries. No selling of our airports required.

1/ We know what happens when public infrastructure gets privatized: costs go up, quality goes down, and it's everyday people who end up paying for it. Mark Carney's Investment Summit might be over, but the fight to protect our public goods isn't.
Canada's infrastructure belongs to the people.
