“You can tell the economic character of a nation by the way its infrastructure works.” Powerful words from George Monbiot on BBC Question Time explaining how Wales’s economy was built to extract wealth rather than enrich its own people, and why we need the powers to put that right. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #Annibyniaeth

Since 1284, the wealth of Wales has been used to enrich English oligarchs, leaving Wales in poverty. And you can see the legacy today: six of the ten poorest boroughs in Britain are in South Wales - and all of them are places that generated massive wealth.

On Question Time last night, I talked about the extractive economic model that has left Wales - and many other nations - impoverished *because they were so rich in resources*. You can see the problem simply by looking at the map: the infrastructure looks like a drainage system.

I wonder why they bother. Is this really the best use of their time? Don't they have better targets? Don't they see that everyone might benefit if they read the thing they claim to be responding to, and sought to understand what it says before wading in? But hey-ho, life's great mysteries ...

I’ve seen this pattern many times. You write a nuanced thread about a complex issue. The first responses are thoughtful and interesting. Then someone on another forum extracts a sentence and deliberately misinterprets it. Then your timeline is flooded by trolls all saying exactly the same thing.

IMO, the Marine Conservation Society does more harm than good. It mis-rates species & spreads confusion, when it should be telling us to eat less fish/simply stop. Now, FFS, it has given bluefin tuna a green rating, despite v little data. www.theguardian.com/environment/... 1/2

I just recognise that there's a very deep sensitivity here. It can be hard for non-Jews to understand the intergenerational trauma and terror of people who have been subject to centuries of extermination attempts, merely for being who they are. Please try to bear the context in mind. Thank you.

I don't expect to convince many people. I've been stunned by the response those of us who objected to the Green Party motion have received. I've been called a “genocide lover” a “warmonger”, a “colonialist” etc. I'm none of these things. The very opposite in fact.

Many people seem to be passionately attached to the statement “Zionism is racism”. But it seems unnecessary, even gratuitous, to me. We can say all the things we need about successive governments of Israel and their horrific policies without having to make this generalisation.

George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I don’t identify as Jewish – I have a very mixed ancestry: French, Belgian, Spanish, Swedish, Peruvian and West African as well as Ashkenazi. But I know enough to recognise how ignorant, ahistorical, insulting and threatening this crude compression of a long and complex history feels to many Jews.
102739 0
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
You can also rightly note that the Israeli government is both Zionist and racist (as well as murderous and genocidal). But to extend that conjunction to all Zionists is a syllogism - a logical fallacy. It becomes even worse when “Zionist” is used by some people as code for Jew.
1234815 0
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
So you could reasonably argue that an *outcome* of Zionism is racism. But that is not the same as stating “Zionism is racism”. Racism is not where it came from. It is not what motivated the deep yearning for safety, for a refuge, whether 80 years ago or 800.

George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Now of course there's a problem here, a very big one: a dedicated homeland and self-determination for the Jewish people meant a loss of homeland and of self-determination for the Palestinians. That was the unacknowledged truth, from Balfour onwards, and no serious attempt was made to resolve it.
1934323 0
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
In the late 1930s, as the scale and intent of the Holocaust became clear, some of my ancestors and relatives, like many Jews across Europe, changed their minds again. A permanent refuge suddenly looked like a very good idea. Is this because they were racist? No. It's because they were desperate.
1129514 0
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
But in the 1920s, some of them changed their views. They became anti-Zionists. Why? Because they believed that if Jews achieved a dedicated homeland, this would give antisemites yet another excuse to expel them from Europe and Russia.

George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
OK. Now let me tell you about my ancestors. They fled across Europe, keeping ahead of a long series of pogroms, persecutions and antisemitic laws. They arrived in England in the mid-19th century. Many, going back a long way, were Zionists: they craved a dedicated homeland, a refuge from persecution.

I hope we can also agree that Western governments, including the US, UK and Germany, have been assisting these crimes, through weapons sales, surveillance, diplomatic and media support and arrests of protesters. I hope we can further agree that these great crimes should be prosecuted. Agreed so far?

Anyone could see that, including MPs from across the parties who were questioning him in this evidence session. It must have taken superhuman efforts *not* to see it. Why was Watson so determined, even back then, to defend a system of controls which hardly existed, let alone being "really robust"?

Quotes from his testimony to the PAC in 2008: "my impression is we have a pretty good system in the UK" "I have not seen evidence to show that there is a problem yet" "My sense is we actually have a really robust system." "My view is that it works pretty well." But the system was & is total shite.
