I’ve seen this pattern many times. You write a nuanced thread about a complex issue. The first responses are thoughtful and interesting. Then someone on another forum extracts a sentence and deliberately misinterprets it. Then your timeline is flooded by trolls all saying exactly the same thing.

I wonder why they bother. Is this really the best use of their time? Don't they have better targets? Don't they see that everyone might benefit if they read the thing they claim to be responding to, and sought to understand what it says before wading in? But hey-ho, life's great mysteries ...

It was your post yesterday which prompted this; bsky.app/profile/real...

Have noticed threads of maybe 5+ posts being compressed/nested - with a click to reveal a few more, then another click, & another etc As if the gist of the thread is enough, before loads of replies, many relating to unseen posts or older replies. Doesn't really serve the OP or reader well. Baiting?

As a retired therapist I never cease to be amazed at how often people will conjure up a demon, transfer it onto a convenient other, and then try to get into a debate over something they completely imagined. I wouldn’t call it a pathology, but it’s certainly pathological.

Your thread makes a good case but I also think there is a perfectly reasonable argument that concludes Zionism is racism - something you dismissed as 'toxic gesture politics'. I didn't back the motion but don't see many seeking to understand the position before wading in.

The glory of not understanding an issue's nuances, but being able to convey an often outrageous opinion completely anonymously in 300 characters & then walk away without the soul destroying public humiliation one would incur should it be espoused in the pub. Social media - the modern day road rage.

I get peeved if I can't read an original article because it's paywalled! I only have a finite amount of time & money. Something like The Times, which is supposed to be the paper of public record, should be available via my library press reader access but it isn't!

1/ The problem activity is 'read'. Everyone is taught to recognise words, fewer to read sentences and paragraphs and even fewer to critically assess what they are reading, if fiction vs their own experience if factual against source evidence. Fix that and number of trolls drops to just shitposters.

Are you referring to the BBC Today programme?

If it not just an AI driven bot farm as recently taken down by a Ukrainian drone then someone with an axe to grind and a belief to support. We all want to believe things but few think "is this true?" and I guess a tiny few get their proof from watching the pile on.

Bots. It's all automated. There are very few real people online compared with bots. It's all false.

‘Yet again the left go off on an elitist rant about being misinterpreted when they are still using fossil fuels and wearing clothes made in Myanmar, and also…’ (drones on tediously for 94 tweets…)

it's the social media equivalent of "flooding the zone with 💩" the idea is similar to sealioning: to waste your time and piss you off. they're bots - hence the repetition

When I start to ponder such things, it usually means I need a break from social media. And this platform is about the best of a bad lot, as I’m sure you know. Facebook is a hive of blatant racism. If Bluesky is frustrating you, Facebook would have you Elvising the TV. Take a break 😊👍💚

Just out of interest, George, relating specifically to the 'thoughtful, interesting' ones - how many did you engage with/repost, and in what way were any of your own opinions changed or challenged by what you read?

‘real’ trolls or just bots programmed to repeat? A troll posts crap & the bots amplify. Haven’t found BlueSky to be quite as bad as Twatter, but it still occurs (it was an excellent thread and - above all - included personal family experience so …)

Bro it’s not trolls, it’s bots. Equally as annoying, but less original.
