On Jacob Geller

I'm aware of the rape allegations against Jacob Geller, as well as the fact that his name is on a court-ordered list of UNC students disciplined for sexual violence. I've hesitated on whether to post anything about it, because the victim hasn’t been identified and I don’t want to participate in a retraumatizing conversation against their wishes. At the same time, as someone who has collaborated with Jacob Geller, I do not want my silence to be taken as endorsement.

For my part, I did not know about this and I wish I had. What justice and repair look like in cases like these are for the victim to decide, and I do not know their wishes or what accountability processes, if any, took place. However, strictly on a personal level, I’m uncomfortable having collaborated with someone who has presented himself as a nonthreatening feminist without ever disclosing his history of sexual violence to me or any other colleagues I’ve spoken to. I have no intention of ever working with Geller again. Beyond that, the person this happened to ought to be the ultimate authority on what happens next, and how they wish to tell their story if at all.

This was my approach for Star Fox Adventures and Zero when I replayed them earlier this year too, and I also found myself fascinated by them in different ways, although Zero I would still say was not a good game. Adventures and Other M are gameplay styles I’d like to see Nintendo return to someday

Oh absolutely. Again, I mostly think that is down to the atrocious translation and ENG VO work, but I’m not trying to downplay that. That being said, I engaged Other M kind of as an individual game and with the knowledge that the series lived on. And it lead to me enjoying it in spite of its legacy

Idk man, I’m just weird. I just think that if I wanna replay a 2D Metroid game, I’d rather pick up Fusion, Dread or any version of II before Super. meanwhile, Other M is this unique, weird, avant garde thing that fails at what it wants to do almost as much as it succeeds at it. I respect that.

I don’t think it’s perfect, but it wasn’t the flaming trash can everyone says it is. The translation and VO is mostly to blame here in my opinion. Also this game has Anthony Higgs. I cannot hate on this man, he’s awesome. I want him to show up in Ravenous somehow.

I feel it would’ve been a good base to expand upon for a sequel, had it gotten the chance to get one. And this is a stunning game for the Wii. The fact it runs as well as it does shocked me too. Idk, man. I can’t hate this game. It tried something weird and avant garde, and partially succeeded.
