It’s fun to see this progression -or rollercoaster- of learning the intricacies of gouache, a medium I hadn’t touched until a few months ago. There’s more of these 5x7” paintings, but these feel like the best representation of growth. Gouache on paper, 5x7”. Check the alt text for more info.

Thinking about how much of the art I’ve made recently deviates so far from what’s been comfortable for the past twenty years. I can’t really claim that I don’t -or can’t- draw or paint anymore; and a teaching opportunity to play in ceramics has been a new avenue to re-explore.
An in-progress drawing in the foreground of the artist drawing in a studio space. The artist is nearly fully rendered, except for one eye and some detail in the right arm. The background is incomplete: a series of lines and shapes on a light graphite grid. In the upper left corner, a reference photograph from which the artist is working.

Baby girl turned 18(!) today. Unable to hear, poor vision, crunchy joints but the bloodwork of a dog half her age somehow.
A man holds a puggle dog in his arms, balancing on his crouched knee. The dog is tan and orange, wearing both a face that says “I do not like this” and a pink birthday hat.

Still alive. Still printin’.
Dave, dressed in a black T-shirt, black apron and black beanie, scribes a pencil across a gray surface of matte mylar on top of an inky surface, creating a trace monoprint, in an academic printmaking studio. Dave, dresser in a black T-shirt and black apron stands behind two wooden tables sorting a pile of handmade prints, printed in a variety of yellows, oranges and reds. His hands sort prints from left to right according to their quality and completion. Behind him to the left is a wire drying rack.

Last year’s pochoir print demo is perennially pertinent.

The left side of the spread features four photos of the 9INHANDPRESS studio (a photograph of a press table, a rack of work-in-progress prints, a collection of books, and a pegboard containing brayers and printmaking tools of all sorts). The right side includes text, and four images: one of the artist, and three pieces of the artist’s work. A closer screen grab of the grid of four photos from the spread.
